Re: Test Matches.

Most rules from One day cricket apply. A few differences:

Both teams play 2 innings each instead of 1 innings each.

There is no restriction on the number of overs bowled per innings (unlike in ODI where only 50 are allowed). There is also no restriction on the number of overs a bowler can bowl. In ODIs a bowler can only bowl max 10 overs.

Test cricket is still played in traditional white clothing while One Days are played in coloured clothing.

Play is limited to 5 days (averaging around 90 overs per day). If a result is reached by then, good. If a team is still batting by the end of Day 5 then its considered a draw.

One might think WTF whats the point of playing if a draw is one of the more probable outcomes? Well the thing is.. thats why its called TEST. Because its a test of a team's endurance.. and most of all ability to think on thier feet.

Its extremely easy to lose, very difficult to draw and VERY VERY VERYYYYY difficult to win. So if you can actually pull a WIN in a test match that means you are good stuff.

Difficult to win because lets say Team A is doing badly.. so Team A decides they dont want to win and they're gonna settle for a draw. That means Team A will keep defending each and every ball bowled at them all day long, instead of playing run scoring shots. That makes thing really really difficult for Team B to win. And even then if Team B can pull a win.. then they really are cricketers extraordinaire.

You must have seen that in ODIs there are often upsets (small team beating stronger side) but you dont often see upsets in test matches. And if a small underdog side can manage to pull a draw playing against a much difficult team then all credit to the underdogs.

One Day games are exciting stuff. Most people like it because its over in a day and you get a result. But to the purists and extreme cricket lovers, Ond Days are still childs play. Its Test cricket thats the real thing.

Test cricket is the way cricket has always been played ever since it was invented. Ond Days on the other hand are only 20-25 years old... made specially to draw public attention to an otherwise boring game for many.

Umm thats all i could think of right now.

Sincerely,
Captain Lota

Re: Test Matches.

Nope you just strike the matches on the side of the box, and test if they work:smiley:

Re: Test Matches.

Thanks Lota,

But I kinda new most of that, how **exactly **are draws reached? What factors decide a win or a draw?

Re: Test Matches.

For a WIN:
Each Team can bat twice (not a must if the manage enough runs in 1 innings) but in order to win a Team must bowl out its opposite number twice during the couse of the match …
Like: Team A wins teh toss and elects to bat first … they post a total of 550 (bowled out or they declare) or so (which is good total anyway)
Team B comes into bat and manages only 370 in its 1st innings … so the deficit is about 180 runs … Now Team A bats again (their 2nd. Innings) and get to a total of 230 (bowled out or they declare) … means they (Team A) lead Team B by 410 runs (180 lead from the 1st innings + 230 from the 2nd. innings) … The Target to win the Match for Team B is to score 411 runs in its 2nd innings … For team A to win this match it has to bowl out Team B before they reach the target 411 …

Now if Team B manages to reach the score of 411 with atleast 1 wicket remaining it has won the match … If on the other hand Team A manages to bowl out Team B for 350 or so then Team A has won the match … Now that was a WIN or LOSE situation

For a Draw:
Take the above given example … if Team B fails to reach the Target of 411 but still has atleast 1 Wicket left till the Match duration reaches its end (usually the end of Day 5 of a test Match) it will be a draw coz:
1: Team A has failed to bowl out Team B in its 2nd innings with in the remaining time of the match
2: Team B has failed to reach the Target but could avoid losing all wickets in its 2nd innings

Now if u consider weather or bad light interruption (slow over rate) then u’ll hardly find a match these days in which 90 overs per day r bowled throughout the entire match duration … in Pakistan they hardly managed 80 overs coz of light fading quickly

Hope this helps to understand

Re: Test Matches.

Crescent, teams play to win first. If that's unattainable, the next best option is to play for a draw. It's quite simple if you ask me. What exactly do you not understand about Test cricket?

Re: Test Matches.

ok thanks I got it now :D turns out I actually knew all this, but needed clearification.

funguy...after reading all the posts, your post summed it up all nicely :p

Re: Test Matches.

Lota bhai, try explaining the follow on rule to the newbies. It always gives me a headache!
