I’m flabbergasted. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of terrorists forming and using a conventional air force to bomb their foes!
Not just that… but the terrorist Tamil Tigers used their air force to bomb the main base of the Sri Lankan Air Force.
Good grief! How freaking incompetent must the Sri Lankan Air Force be if they don’t ever have fighter squadrons constantly standing by to intercept any hostile airborne forces AT THEIR MAIN BASE???
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Tamil Tiger rebels in two light planes dropped bombs on Sri Lanka’s main air force base on the outskirts of the capital early Monday, killing two officers, officials said.
The rebels claimed responsibility for the raid, their first using aircraft to bomb targets.
Witnesses reported gunfire and flashes at the base about 20 miles from Colombo. The adjacent international airport was temporarily closed for traffic, but later resumed limited operations, an airport duty officer said. The airport was not hit.
“Two attack aircraft belonging to Liberation Tigers carried out bombing raids at the Sri Lanka air force air base … and returned safely,” rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan told The Associated Press by the telephone from the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi.

Well the Tamils are pretty smart & intelligent people. They dominate the IT industry.
I can compare them to the Jew post WW2 when they created Isreal and made themselves a world powerhouse.
Like the them, the LTTE have become great gureilla fighters and have great organizational skills.
The only solution I think for the Sri-lanka conflict (and similarly for Iraq) is to divide the country.

I was always of the opinion that LTTE is a threat to India, considering the southern State of Tamilnadu, which is very close to Sri Lanka (just a strip of sea in between), since LTTE after many years of speculations has carried out an air attack successfully.
NEW DELHI: With most of India’s surveillance systems tasked to monitor the borders with Pakistan and China, a low-flying aircraft laden with explosives can manage to penetrate the far-from-impregnable airspace over south India.
Consequently, the dramatic unveiling of the fledgling LTTE “air force”, through an attack on a Sri Lankan airbase on Monday, has added a new dimension to the potential threat it could pose to India. “India has not figured on LTTE’s terror radar since Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991. We have been monitoring LTTE’s air capabilities for sometime. While not particularly alarming for us, we cannot let our guard down,” said a senior defence official.
“The LTTE network in Tamil Nadu remains quite intact and it is, in fact, making some inroads into a few other states to source supplies for its bomb-making factories,” he added.
Purely in terms of military capabilities — with just a couple of light propeller-driven aircraft and probably two helicopters operating from airstrips in northern Sri Lanka — LTTE’s “Air Tigers” wing is just a rag-tag outfit.

yeah…a solution which will create boundries where they will continue to fight under one reason or the other particularly the territorial disputes that arise after demarcation:grumpy:
The only solution is to allow tamils tigers to have equal or perhaps even more representation in lankan parliament. In short more rights and freedom.

it was a simple two man aeroplane, the type people own themselves with a modifications on under carriage. You press a button and a munition dropped. Bit likw what was being used in first world war.
Drug cartels, possibly terrorists to some been using planes since ever.
