Terror in Indian Institute of Science

One person was killed and four injured after unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire in the campus of Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science late Wednesday evening.

The deceased was Professor M C Puri, Professor Emeritus in the Mathematics Department of Delhi’s Indian Institute of Technology. He had retired a few years ago.

The injured are Dr Vijay Chandru a senior scientist of IISc, Dr Pankaj Gupta of IIT, Vijay Patil, a lab assistant at the Dhanvanthri Kshetra, Cadilla Phamaceuticals Laboratory within the campus, and Dr Sangeetha. They were rushed to the M S Ramaiah Hospital. Their condition is stated to be critical.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the victims along with other participants of an international seminar were moving from the J N Tata Auditorium towards the Satish Dhavan auditorium. Four to five people got off a white Ambassador car and started firing at random. The attackers allegedly used AK47s. An unexploded bomb was also reportedly found in the vicinity.

One of the world’s leading Research Institute, The Indian Institute of Science is attacked by terrorists leaving one professor dead and many others injured. The current congress government in the state of karnataka and in the centre is incapable of dealing with extremists. They are extremely soft and useless. It is time that they start using atleast “some force” and bring in laws to protect the citizens.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Stalker,

You have absolutely no idea what IISC is. This is one of the best Universities in Asia.

Anyhow, it has its own nobel laureates like Sir C.V. Raman and Max Born in its alumni list.

It also has a lot of patents to its credits: Please visit this link.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

I wonder what makes those guys attack IISC. Bangalore is a calm city and filled with lot of peace loving people. Typically this state of Karnataka and Bangalore is very far away from communal conflicts. Unlike some northern states, different communities live in peace and Harmony. Incidents like this will start fanning the communal hatred and disturb the peace. The central and state governments are absolutely foolish. Last year the Andhra govt. released a dreaded terrorist Mujeeb, from the jail (and the home minister defended the release) on august 15th and few days ago he was again nabbed when he was smuggling arms and ammunition. The AP congress government wanted to appease muslims and in the process set the devil free. The govt. should realise these hard core militants "WILL NEVER CHANGE" come what may be and it is the duty of the state to protect every citizen from violence. Scums like them should be tried quickly and awarded max. penalty and also the politicians who support these guys just for a few votes (or kursi) should be tried and punished.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

I feel even the hard core freedom fighter supporters will find it difficult to justify attack on IISC.

so what next Infy, wipro … karnataka govt needs to take some action …

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Karnataka govt. should act at least this time, and for God's sake. I know this state is ruled by a congress-JDS co-alition who are fit for nothing. The CM Dharam singh is absolutely spineless and that trickles down to the bottom. Let us wait and see how this govt. will react.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

well lets not jump the gun and accuse some terrorist organisation. Lets waite for some more proof.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Does anybody know who did this? In the States, you have students attacking fellow students and teachers in schools, and this happens all the time. Could it not even be a possibility that the same thing has happened here?

Try not to jump the gun before all the facts are out there.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Yes, I had posted a news link on another thread re:Bangladesh. This has been done by a Bangladesh based group which has been trained by ISI.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai, in the calculation of the terrorists and their sponsors in Pakistan, are attractive targets for acts of economic terrorism.

They believe successful acts of economic terrorism there could affect an important source of India's foreign exchange earnings, keep foreign information technology companies away from India and affect India's stock market, which attracts a large volume of foreign institutional investment based on the value of the shares of the IT companies.

Since General Pervez Musharraf seized power in Pakistan in October 1999, he has embarked on a programme for the diversification of the Pakistani economy, which is now mainly dependent on the export of textiles, sports and leather goods. In this connection, considerable attention is being paid, with Chinese assistance, to develop Pakistan's IT capability and attract foreign software and outsourcing companies to Pakistan.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

And BTW

IISc Bangalore—First in Asia- Pacific

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, has been ranked first in the Asia-Pacific region and 18th in the World University rankings, according to the World Education Report of Sept. 1997.

The 10 criteria for ranking included the number of international publications in renowned journals, research projects funding as a percentage of overall university funds, feedback from agencies for which the university has handled research projects, and patents held by the university.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

who cares? it's not even a World Affair..

btw any 'terrorists' that step out of an Ambassador should just die of shame before they are caught and punished.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Is Outsourcing the Next Terror Target?

It’s a possibility that’s staring India in the face after the first ever terror attack in Bangalore, the center of the country’s thriving outsourcing industry

At about 7.30 pm on December 28, a gunman walked into an international conference occurring at the Indian Institute of Science, a prestigious academic institution in Bangalore, and began throwing hand-grenades into the conference hall—four grenades, all unexploded, have been found so far on the Institute’s campus. Apparently panicking when none of the grenades exploded, the gunman opened fire with an AK-56 while he retreated. A retired Mathematics professor attending the conference was killed, and four others were wounded. The gunman scaled a wall and fled; the Bangalore police believe that he had an accomplice.

No arrests have been made, and the police have named no suspects yet, but suspicion is increasingly zeroing in on the Islamist terror outfits that have been waging a mounting campaign of terror against India. The Lashkar-e-Toiba, a jihadist group that aims to driving India out of Kashmir, is a prime suspect, but Bangladesh-based terror outfits are also considered potential culprits. India’s security experts have been warning for months that it was only a matter of time before terrorists attacked Bangalore in a bid to weaken the country’s booming technology sector. In March this year, Indian authorities announced that plans seized from militants belonging to a Lashkar-e-Toiba cell in New Delhi showed that the terrorists had planned to strike at software companies in Bangalore.

**
If the Jihadist groups are indeed behind the attack, then they have picked their target well. The Indian Institute of Science is one of India’s most important scientific institutions, and its presence in Bangalore is a key reason that the city became India’s technology powerhouse. That’s why the psychological impact of the attack is immense—analogous to the impact that an attack on MIT would have in the United States. Jaswant Singh, a former finance minister of India and a member of the BJP, India’s major opposition party, said that the attack could seriously hurt “the internal, international, and economic standing of the country.” Terrorism experts warn that Bangalore remains an attractive target for any terror group looking to hit India. “Attacking Bangalore would be a logical step for the jihadis at a time when India is becoming an economic power,” says Anil Bhat, a New Delhi-based terrorism expert.

The attack is likely to shift attention within India to the question of how well prepared the country’s outsourcing centers are for terror strikes. In a press statement released immediately after the terror attack, NASSCOM, the trade body for India’s technology sector, stated that the country’s outsourcing companies already have many security measures in place; however, it said that the incident “highlights the need to review and upgrade these.”

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

Stick to the topic please and keep it decent!

Ta.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

whoever is behind these jihdists will burn in hell for terrorising such innocent people. I hope the government finds the perpetrators and those behind them and prosecute them promptly.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

India has a long history of suffering from inferiority complex. When 911 was staged by US governemnt , India decided to do the same by attacking its own parliament. Such tactics are proving to be futile for already dilapidated Indian so-called democratic state.

Re: Terror in Indian Institute of Science

u got it right. USA wanted to attack Iraq and hence staged to kill some 3000 people in the twin towers. India wanted to share the limelight so it staged and killed few security officers in Indian parliament. :D. Any way happy new year to you.
