there could have been other ways for them to "tell" their families about their mission (e.g a taped video, suicide letter or DNA). I am not going to buy your reasoning that they carried the passports and IDs cos they wanted their families to know what happened to them.

The suspects were allegedly found with documentation, possibly including passports, which revealed their origin.
I doubt if they are so stupid that they would carry their passports by 'mistake'... it could be false ids? Or maybe they did want to let their families and people know who they were incase they died. One of the terrorists who called TOI from Nariman house today said what they were doing was heroic and they would rather die as 'lions' than under the miserable life that Indian government had created for them.

India forces Pak to send ISI chief
New Delhi/Islamabad, Nov 28 (PTI) Angered by the Mumbai terror strikes, India today forced Pakistan to send its ISI chief here to provide evidence about the role of Pakistan- based “elements” in the “outrageous” attacks as it made clear that the bilateral ties would be hurt if these don’t stop.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani that investigators had found involvement of Pakistan-based elements in the attacks in the commercial capital.
He told Gilani that Pakistan should send its ISI chief Lt Gen Shuja Pasha to New Delhi “to cooperate in the investigations of the Mumbai attack and for sharing certain information”.
Pakistan agreed to Singh’s proposal and said Pasha would travel to New Delhi soon, for which modalities would be worked out by the two sides.
During the telephonic conversation with Singh, Zardari assured him that Islamabad “will cooperate with India in exposing and apprehending the culprits and masterminds behind” the attacks in Mumbai.
The President told Singh “non-state actors wanted to force upon the governments their own agenda but they must not be allowed to succeed. Investigations are going on and mind it Israel, UK & USA are going do the same so this time its different the world is watching and if Pakistanis links are proved then ?
I am not saying that Pakistan Govt is involved there are extremist elements in Pakistan who are supporting these activities. Pakistani people should come out of denial phase and should brace them self for the truth.

mAD_Scientist...the mystery is yet unsolved but the main suspect is ISI itself sepecially after Benazir had said she would allow US to question Abdul Qadeer Khan and will flush AL-Qaueda...There are a lot of Al-Qaueda sypmpatheizers within Pakistani military establishment and some middle rank military officers even have family relations with Al-Qaueda...This is what Strait Times has reported ...

Why based your hypothetical question for Pakistan only? Why not India? Seems like you have already made up your mind, it is very unlikely that you will accept any conclusion which does not blame Pakistan. Indians should also come out of denial, there is no question about it.

Waisay, being an Indian and all, I don’t know why we cannot accept that maybe we did it. There are good and bad people everywhere. Gunday, dakoos, mafia type criminals, etc…we have plenty of them in India who have commited hideous crimes. Or are they also Pakistani
