AN extensive “Hindu terror” network was under investigation by police in India yesterday over some of the country’s most devastating terrorist bomb outrages, challenging the longstanding belief that militants manipulated by Pakistan’s ISI spy agency are always to blame.

A senior army officer arrested for alleged involvement in the network was being questioned about a series of blasts including last year’s bombing of the Samjhauta Express - the so-called “Freedom Train” that links India and Pakistan - in which 68 people, mostly Muslims, were killed.

A series of arrests following the discovery of the Hindu terror plot is seen as acutely embarrassing for the Government led by Manmohan Singh, as well as for the opposition Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, ahead of a general election next year.

The Government has been claiming that bomb blasts are invariably the work of jihadists linked to the ISI. At the same time, the BJP, which believes it can surf back into office at the election on the back of what it claims is its strong anti-terrorist policy, is having its credentials questioned because of reported links with some of the alleged Hindu extremist conspirators who have been arrested.

The discovery of the terror network follows months of bewilderment over the failure of police to arrest anyone over the bombing campaign, which has targeted virtually every major city across India.

The investigation by the Anti-Terrorist Squad of the state of Maharashtra revealed that “Hindu terror”, not “Muslim terror”, was behind September’s bomb blasts in Malegaon, near Mumbai, in which four people were killed and dozens more injured.

That led to the arrest of a lieutenant-colonel as well as a retired major in the Indian army, an institution that has, until now, been regarded as a bulwark against communalism.

Defence Minister AKAnthony has expressed dismay over the arrests, describing them as “a matter of serious concern”.

“We are very determined to get to the root of the whole thing,” he said.

Also arrested over the Malegaon blasts was a well-known Hindu nun with close links to theBJP and other right-wing organisations.

Following the arrests, other bomb blasts that have occurred in India recently are being held up to scrutiny to see whether they, too, may have been caused by Hindu terrorists .

The attack on the Friendship Express train is under the microscope. So, too, is the anti-Christian violence that has been sweeping the state of Orissa.
