Tendulkar has no retirement plans

NEW DELHI: Indian batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar said Monday he had no plans to retire after his World Cup triumph, but said the team would miss outgoing coach Gary Kirsten.

India regained the World Cup after 28 years with a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai on Saturday under former South African batsman Kirsten.

“Personally, I would say Gary (Kirsten) should continue but he has family commitments,” Tendulkar told a local TV channel.

“I respect his decision. We will miss him a lot. It’s been a pleasure to work with him. He’s probably worked harder than anyone else.”

India not only secured the number-one ranking in Tests and number two in one-day internationals under Kirsten, but also became a formidable force both at home and away.

Tendulkar, the world’s leading run scorer in both Tests (14,692) and one-day internationals (18,111), became a World Cup winner for the first time on his sixth and probably last appearance in the tournament.

He said winning the World Cup was his biggest cricketing moment and wished he could have shared it with his father.

“I miss my father. He would be proud. My kids being there for the victory lap made it even more special,” said Tendulkar, whose father died during the 1999 World Cup, adding that he had no plans to retire.

“I can’t believe we’re the world champions. I am enjoying cricket too much to retire from any form of the game,” said Tendulkar, who will turn 38 this month.

The master batsman rated Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the “best captain” for leading the team shrewdly in the high-pressure tournament.

“He (Dhoni) reads the situation well, is open to ideas and above all he stays calm and doesn’t show frustration,” Tendulkar said.

It was the second major title India had won under Dhoni after the World Twenty20 Championships in South Africa in 2007.

Tendulkar said India had peaked at the right time.

“In the knockout stage, we peaked at the right time. We batted, fielded and bowled well. You see effort from all players. Performance no one can guarantee, but effort you can guarantee,” said Tendulkar.

India beat defending champions Australia in the quarter-finals and Pakistan in the semi-final before prevailing over Sri Lanka.

*I had the privilege to watch Tendulkar live in an exhibition match In Peshawar1989. He smashes sixes in Qadeer over. *

This man is super fit, now I hardly through a ball and he still diving like ateenager.

I think this is a very suitable time for him to retire.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

well if he makes it past the selection committee by merit, then its not much of an issue. he isn't irreplaceable on the indian side since a few years now, it'd be a good idea to make a graceful exit sometime before the struggle begins..

you never know when this Bold part suddenly come.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

izzat issi mein hai abhi exit le lai...:D if he keeps waiting for his 100th 100, it might just get toooo late :p.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

What is he waiting for? only 100th ton? Retire at the top yaar!

On the other hand, he sure is fit enough to play on for another year at least.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

but this 100th ton he can get in test.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

he has not become a burden on the team yet. not like chacha, gangu , kapil or gavaskar who dragged the team behind for years .

sachin is still leading , if bret farve can play till his 40s then i dont mind seeing sachin in next WC :)

he will retire a day before selection committee decides not to include him in playing 11 due to his performance.

he means lot to the sport hero starved nation, one man just committed suicide during the final match because sachin couldnt hit a ton

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

As long as he gets selected in the playing XI on merit, and he has the mental & physical capacity to play the game who are we to suggest retirement for him ?

In WC 2011, he played as well or better than a lot of 20somethings in both the Indian and other teams :D

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

So is he waiting to do a ponting w/o the captaincy? :hmmm:

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

I dont think any selectors will EVER drop him from the team no matter how $hitty his performances become (which i highly doubt)

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

I agree. He will probably quit himself when he cannot play anymore.

Lets not forget that even at 37 he was still the second highest run scorer in the WC, and was just 20+ runs behind Dilshan.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

The biggest surprise of 2011 so far

Jokes apart I think he would like to score a test triple century before he retires. He is almost 38 now and this year is his best chance of doing it as he is in form

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

^They'll need to schedule a match against Bangladesh for that :p

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

Sehwag scored a triple ton against Pakistan. No reason Sachin can’t do the same :hehe:

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

But Sachin has played against Pakistan lot more than Sehwag has :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

on what grounds are these nuts asking him to retire? He has performed really well and against some tough bowling. Has been top scoring quite regularly plus can bowl a couple of overs with control.

Very useful player who scares the wits out of even top notch bowlers.

And that is why all you guys are trying to 'encourage him to leave' because you want to weaken the team.

Not gonna happen. Take a hike

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

Not happening anytime soon. He is going strong. What's unbelievable is how he has modified his game in the last 3 years to exert less pressure on his body but still score at the same rate. Amazing.

Re: Tendulkar has no retirement plans

He is the most decent and responsible cricketer of the Indian team I have ever seen...He can continue given he performs well.
