Tendulkar greater than Bradman, says Gavaskar
Reuters - 24 August 2002

LEEDS, England (Reuters) - Sachin Tendulkar may not agree but, according to his compatriot Sunil Gavaskar, he should be regarded as a greater batsman than Donald Bradman.

Gavaskar told Saturday’s Daily Telegraph: “For all Bradman’s achievements, Tendulkar is the closest thing to batting perfection I’ve seen - in terms of technique and temperament.”

Tendulkar’s 185 not out in India’s first innings of 584 for four on Friday, gave him his 30th test century - one more than Bradman. Only Gavaskar, with 34, has scored more.

The 29-year-old Tendulkar, looking to push on to his third double century on Saturday, had said: "Statistically, I have passed Don Bradman but I can’t be compared with him. He’s not a normal person.

“You can only dream of scoring a hundred every three innings.”

Gavaskar added: "If you have a look at some of the film of Bradman, you see his bat came from third man. Because Bradman was Bradman, he could see the ball incredibly early and score at a phenomenal rate.

"Tendulkar’s bat comes down very straight, he is perfectly balanced off either foot, and there is not a shot he cannot play.

**‘COMPLETE BATSMAN’ **

"He is probably the most complete batsman the game has seen.

“I would back him to become the first man to score a hundred international hundreds - that’s fifty in Tests and fifty in one-dayers. Bowlers of the world beware.”

Tendulkar overtook Bradman’s haul in his 99th Test. Bradman made his 29 Test centuries in 52 matches and averaged a whisker under 100 each visit to the crease, around 40 more than the Indian’s average.

The right-hander from Bombay has also scored 33 one-day international hundreds, the most by any player.

Tendulkar was honoured to be invited to the reclusive Bradman’s birthday party shortly before he died, aged 92, in February 2001.

Bradman, widely regarded as the greatest batsman to have ever played the game, had said Tendulkar was the one contemporary batsman who reminded him of himself.

I have to agree with Mr. Sunny there.
Eventhough i don't think much of Tendulkur as a great batsman but I think he is better than Bradman.
Honestly, how many of us have seen him play?
And yet most of us consider him as the greatest batsman eventhough we have never seen him.

Tendulkar is the best batsmen in the world at the moment. But it is unfair to compare him to the great Bradman.

Compare the records:

*Tendulkar overtook Bradman's haul in his 99th Test. Bradman made his 29 Test centuries in 52 matches and averaged a whisker under 100 each visit to the crease, around 40 more than the Indian's average. *

None of us have seen Bradman play but looking at this record he is miles ahead of Tendulkar. That does not in any way belittles Tendulkar's acheivements. Imagine what Bradman would be have been like.

Honestly speaking , Its really tough to compare players of two eras specially if when gap is like 50 yrs.Game has changed alot after that .Now its played very differently.Gavaskar got little carried away.

But I think Sachin is most complete batsman after Bradman when it comes to class and technique.

i still think brian lara is better than tendulkar....
u hardly ever see tendulkar play when he shud play....

Yeah Right !! :hehe:

oh really ....

scroll up and see who started this thread!!!

Its not us.. Its you guys who give imporatnce to any tom dick and harry who says anything in favour of or against tendulkar and seek opinion here. huh ....

Ehsan bhai....can this be regarded as a fair comparison though?

Bowlers today are fitter, faster, and much better overall, that they were 50 years ago. So we can safely say that comparitively, Tendulkar is facing a much better breed of bowlers than Bradman did.

On the same token, batsmen are fitter, faster and better overall as well, so accordinly, Tendulkar owes his stats in large part, to better training techniques and facilities as well, and we dont know how much better Bradman would have done, had he had access to personal trainers, top of the line fitness gyms, and personalized dieticians.
So I always feel its unfair to compare two players from two different eras.

Well Said Akif Bhai. You do good in KK.

Akif you might have a point but then the figures are all we have to go on. I think it is unfair to claim that fitness or competitive levels are higher today then they were then. One of the most infamous series the bodline series where England bowlers bowled a very provocative length and line against the Aussie players was duirng Bradman's era. So while we cant compare we cant ignore either the phenomenal sucess of Bradman either and that is all we have to go on. As for Tendulkar he certainly is the best batsmen we have seen in the modern era. Todays batsmen has all the protection he needs while the players in that era had nothing but raw courage to protect them from the bodyline bowling.
