What will he use it for? Dell Latitude X300 is pretty god, its the one I have right now.

Go for DELL.
DELL are considered cheap reliable and great quality.
Im using Dell Inspiron 6000.
Its amazing machine.

Sony Vaio laptops are excellent, they're reasinably priced, quality assured which you would expect from SONY, reliable.
