We are moving to houston.I know a little bit about Houston. Like it has a large desi population those perks which are attached with an American city with desi large population.
I have a few specific questions.
My daughter is in 7th grade and my son is a senior in high school what will happen to their continuity of education. I do not want to wait for a couple of month when their exams will be over.
I want to buy or rent a 3 bed room two baths town home or condo in some decent neighborhood. How much rent or how will it cost to buy one such condo or town home and where ?
yep...Bint e Naeem is right. Where will you be working? Also, another thing to consider are the schools here in different counties. So far, the ones that I have seen with a big desi population is Fort Bend ISD which is around Sugar Land which despite being a heavy desi area is still one of the best places to live in, in all of Texas. I think it was like number 3 in the US. Let me know or PM me if you are looking for something specific. Also, it doesnt hurt to call around to schools here and ask them what it would take for your kids to go to school here......good luck and welcome!
Mirch: As Bint already mentioned, Htown is a VERY large city and the area you're moving to will make a big difference in housing costs/schools. If you could give us an idea on what part of the city your new job is located in, I think you'll get better responses. :)
You should call schools to find out if all their credits will be transferred. For your son who is a senior in high school he might have to take a TAKS test all students are required to pass this test given by state before they can Graduate its consists of 4 parts math English social studies and science
For housing like everyone said it depends which area you want to stay
^ TAKS is no more...it's the STAAR test now. Last year was the first year administering it, so the scores will not count for accountability raitings of any district in Texas. 2012-13 will be the first year that STAAR will count, and those results won't be out until the next school year starts.
You can go the TEA website and check for school accountability ratings (including charter schools, of which there are plenty in Texas...the Harmony Schools of Innovation started in Houston and they are amazing) but again, the last raitings posted will be for 2011-12 school year.
I would strongly suggest that you move after the kids' school year is over. Maybe you can move first and the rest of the family can move later. You can visit them from time to time. Esp for the high school senior its best not to disturb him at this time. Depending on which state you currently live in, the school year shall end in 3-4 months. Surely the rest of the family can manage till then! And yes, I have heard a lot of good things about Sugarland schools as well.
Also, Texas housing isn't as expensive as a lot of other places in the USA.
Something else to keep in mind for your senior in high school..as far as college goes, you'll need 1 yr established residency to be eligible for in state tuition
My job is going to b at west Sam Houston parkway north .now tell me more . We r not planning to buy or rent a big house . As I said earlier 3 bed 2 baths will b fine but the neighborhood has to b decent.
