how many people do it?
how often?
do you feel you are as productive, less productive or more productive when working from home?
how do you work when you telecommute, in a home office or does it matter?
In my case I used to do it very often back in 2002-2003 and then 2004-2005 did not do a whole lot of it in 2006, and now do it once every few weeks, twice a month maybe, can do it more often but the usual day my team works from home is fridays and the masjid i go to is closer to my work, i go in, plus its a very relaxed day and ppl just in a mood to chit chat go out for lunch so great for internal networking and catchign up with people. much of my team telecommutes on Fridays but it works out well for me to go in.
when i do work from hme I have a home office set up, currently its no man’s land since my old couches are taking refuge there until I get rid of them, conference phone and all, I prefered my home office to my office at work but now its kinda nuetral.
As far as productivity goes, one thing that is an advantage is that I dont have ppl who just pop by to get some views on one thing or another, but other than that its equal, not having to commute is a good thing, save gas, avoid traffic etc.
a couple of times a month for regular work…God know how many times during the month cuz i’m oncall
it’s nice to be able to do that when the weather/road conditions are bad…or when i’m not feeling too well, and there’s a deadline approaching - but can work on stuff from home still instead of going to the office…i don’t think i’d like doing it more than a couple of times a month though…simply cuz i need the in-person interaction…tend to get things done better that way i do notice that i end up working longer when i’m @ home…
also, i have a desk n everything setup in my room, but it’s just the laptop that i need really, so i end up walking to different rooms while i work
I think i worked more from home in my previous job cuz I had an office with no windows, felt like a damn broom closet plus the commute was long, now with teh office in the next burb and a decent office I go in more.
prev jobs sometimes I went to the office once or twice a week.
I did on my previous job. But I have found that my energy would dwindle off more easily and quickly then when at the office. My husband works from home at times too mostly if he has confrence calls that require his to be up and running when its daytime in Japan or something. Usually he says its not as productive.
I did a lot before, now I donot as I am part timer. I actually like working in the office. Get ot of the home, in home I am not very productive. I like interacting with ppl. Plus I dont have to commute for long, my work is walking distance, so I avoid traffic in any case.
(plus I dont have an office room, so worked on the dinning table, that was kind of uncomfortable.)
I wish I could, my daily commute is 1.5 hrs each way. :(
As for off hours if the need arises I do work from home, or if I'd called in sick (no rest for the wicked as they say).
I tend to telecommute more when my colleagues are travelling or alos working from home because then it does not make much sense to be in the office from a work perspective, although that gives me a chance to reach out to other ppl inthe company and catch up.
I think telecommuting is a nice option to have, even if I dont use it as much as I can.
I was thinking that working one day a week from home cuts down my fuel costs around 20%. hows that for for incentive.
I normally do it once a week/fortnight. Usually on a Friday because its a bit more relaxed where I'm working at the moment and I have no meetings... Without meetings, I can work as effectively from home as from the client site. Another scenario would be if I'm not feeling too well to be in the office but not too sick to be taking a day off sick.
I have been guilty of working from home on a couple of occasions where I've been up half a night watching cricket and then setting the alarm for 8.30am instead of the usual 6.30 am so I wake up, and jump on the laptop with some breakfast and usually skip shower till lunchtime and dont shave...
Regarding performance, its a bit of both... I've noticed that if I'm really busy, I tend to get more done and end up working longer hours... whereas if things are easy and not so hectic, I probably get less done because I know I can catch up the next day.
I do it every once in a while. I have a home office too but find myself on my couch in front of the TV more often than in the home office. I am less productive at home, obviously. Junk food and TV remote are big distractions.
Tili, depends on where they work. I don't get to work from home :(
X2, ofcourse u decided to work from home on a Friday :p
but of course :)
Friday in most cases is the day everyone in my team is busy focusing on individual stuff, usually dont have any meetings etc, so best day to work remotely.
Telecommuting is awesome. I wish I could do 50% of my job at home. But alas, I have to go into the office.
On those rare days that I can work from home, its waking up in the pjs, usual morning shower routine, minus the unholy act of shaving...finally settling in with a good cup of chai. With multiple windows open, classical music on the radio, and the phone by my side, I delve into the mornings tasks.
Perhaps its because I am facing another work week, or that I prefer being a homebody, that I am describing the telecommuting option in mythic terms.
