Tehelka Report on Gujarat / Modi Exposed

Investigative weekly Tehelka on Thursday claimed to have unravelled the truth behind the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Tehelka claimed it had ‘irrefutable’ evidence that the killings of Muslims post-Godhra train carnage in Gujarat was ‘not a spontaneous swell of anger but a genocide’ planned and executed by top functionaries of the Sangh Parivar and state authorities ‘with the sanction’ of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal claimed that the magazine had carried out a sting operation over the last six months by talking to a number of Sangh Parivar leaders, including Godhra BJP MLA Haresh Bhatt, Shiv Sena leader Babu Bajrangi, who was earlier in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and VHP leaders Anil Patel and Dhawal Jayanti Patel, to bring out the truth.

“We have evidence that bombs were being made in the VHP office premises,” Harinder Baweja, Editor (Investigations), told rediff.com.

“In Tehelka’s ground breaking investigations, for the first time, hear the truth of the genocidal killings from the men who actually did it. In shocking disclosures, Chief Minister Narendra Modi came and patted the back of criminals, and told them that they had done a good job,” Baweja said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has reacted sharply to the magazine’s report stating that Tehelka was acting as CIA (Congress Investigating Agency) and it was a collusive sting, which could hardly be called investigative journalism.
Party spokesman Prakash Javedekar said the ‘dirty tricks department’ of the Congress was at work again in view of the assembly elections in Gujarat.
None of the leaders caught on camera in the expose was available for comments, except Gujarat VHP leader Dhawal Jayanti Patel who said Bajrangi had not talked to him during the riots and that he had not seen the sting operation.
Bhatt was purportedly caught on tape saying he was present in a meeting in which Modi allegedly gave him three days time ‘to do whatever they wanted.’
“After three days, he (Modi) asked to stop and everything came to a halt,” Bhatt said, adding that the chief minister thanked them after the Naroda Patiya masssacre.
The magazine claimed that Dhawal Jayanti Patel told its undercover reporter that the VHP activists made lots of bombs in a factory owned by him. A BJP MLA was shown as saying they even made rocket launchers, which were used in the pogrom.
It also claimed that it has exposed ‘a trail of lies and coercions’ that establishes the fire in coach S-6 of the Sabarmati Express in Godhra on February 27, 2002 was a case of spontaneous mob fury and not a pre-meditated conspiracy as stated by the Gujarat government.

Outraged Indian Americans Demand the dismissal of GujaratState** Government in **India

For Immediate Release:

Friday, October 26, 2007: Several prominent Indian organizations and individuals based in US & Canada are calling for the immediate dismissal of the state government in Gujarat, India following an exposé by the Tehelka news magazine in which many top Hindu nationalist figures linked to the administration admitted to their active role in orchestrating and perpetrating the massacre and ethnic cleansing of Muslims in 2002 in Gujarat. The exposé reveals active participation of key state institutions including police forces and judiciary in the anti-minority pogroms.

Several national and international human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have maintained since 2002 that the Gujarat government led by the BJP Chief Minister Narendra Modi orchestrated these pogroms. Following widespread protests by many Indian American organizations, Modi was denied visa by the United States administration in 2005 on account of his human rights record.

The Tehelka tapes present incontestable evidence of the involvement of state machinery in the massacre. It captures several confessions including that of

  • The state prosecutor Arvind Pandya who stated that the “mass killings of Muslims in Gujarat should be celebrated every year as a victory day” and that “Every judge was calling me in his chamber and showing full sympathy for me… giving full cooperation to me, but keeping some distance… the judges were also guiding me as and when required… how to put up a case and on which date… because basically they are Hindus”.
  • Another confession came from Babu Bajrangi who stated that “to get me out of jail, [Chief Minister] Narendra Modi changed judges thrice”. - Yet another MLA acknowledged that Modi gave him “three days to do whatever violence they wanted”.

In a further disturbing incident that reflects upon the dictatorial nature of the presiding administration in Gujarat, reports are pouring in from the ground that state government is forcing the TV operators to block/censor the telecast of the exposé.

The following organizations and individuals endorsing the above statement are calling upon the government of India for:

  • The immediate dismissal of the Narendra Modi administration and imposition of President’s rule in Gujarat.
  • The immediate arrest of the all criminals who have confessed their crimes in the Tehelka tapes. 1. The transfer of all legal cases pertaining to the Gujarat pogroms of 2002 to a court outside of Gujarat.

  • ‘State sponsoring genocide’. Modi exposed

Modi , the CM of Gujarat, is accused of monitoring a ‘State sponsoring genocide’.

“He (Modi) had given us three days… to do whatever we could…After three days, he asked us to stop and everything came to a halt.”

Ahead of polls, Gujarat riots haunt Modi

NEW DELHI: The victims, the state government, the courts and social activists have all spoken out on the 2002 Gujarat riots, said to be the worst communal strife since Independence.

Now in a sting operation, Tehelka has recorded scores of self-confessed rioters speaking out on the riots - how deadly arsenals were built and transported across the state, how mobs were mobilised and Muslims killed, the role of the police, and even that of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.

At the very outset, however, a disclaimer should be made. These recordings of rioters, often bragging about their “feats”, have not been cross-checked by TOI.

They are being presented as they have been reported by Tehelka in public interest. BJP reacted to them on Thursday evening, describing the sting as “not investigative journalism” but a “collusive” conspiracy to denigrate Modi on the eve of Gujarat polls.

Congress reacted to the expose by calling the disclosures “mind-numbing”. The rioters, according to the magazine, opened up to its reporter who posed as a researcher working on the resurgence of Hindutva.

The reporter, Ashish Khaitan, obviously approached them as being sympathetic to the Hindutva cause. He has clarified that all these disclosures by the rioters were voluntary and that no money was exchanged in the sting operation. By evening, the expose was also being broadcast on television networks.

If there is truth in what is claimed by the rioters, including BJP MLAs, leaders of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the Gujarat riots were carried out by religious zealots with the open support, and often with encouragement and assistance from the state police and administration.

Indeed, the phrase “state-sponsored genocide”, often bandied about by activists, may not be an exaggeration if these claims of rioters are correct.

Take for instance, the claim of Haresh Bhatt, a Bajrang Dal leader in 2002 who is now the BJP MLA from Godhra. He claims the chief minister’s response in the wake of the Godhra incident, in which 58 Hindu pilgrims were burnt in a train, was “favourable” to the suggestion of retribution. Says Bhatt: “He had given us three days… to do whatever we could…After three days, he asked us to stop and everything came to a halt.”

Bhatt said his firecracker factory made bombs and a “complete” rocket launcher.

Re: ‘State sponsoring genocide’. Modi exposed

That was very obvious to people looking from outside, immediate reports that came out which revealed that police was told to not take any action etc but then everything was denied/declined.
