Teething

Okay…it appears to be that time for Noor.
She had her first fever this week and I have to admit, it was horrible to see her suffer like that. I swear I walked with her in my arms until I couldn’t feel my feet anymore.

An ice cube wrapped in a face cloth seemed to give her some relief, but I had to resort to Tempra to bring her fever down.

What are some other tips that can give both baby and mommy some comfort as they both muddle through the experience of teething?

fortunately , for my kids it wasn't that horrible
actually i just discovered first tooth when had my finger chewed

so nothing from experience

but ammi told me once its too comforting for babies to give 'em a massage with olive oil on both sides of forehead .......it relieves pain

n other than that i've heard there is a veryvery good homeopathic medicine for this .......its recommended here in germany n netherland too...........but its name just slipped off my mind ......you can ask your local doctor/chemist

sorry ....wasn't of much help

Muzna,

sorry, I didn't understand ur question actually

are you talking about growing teeth??? or do u want to know about fever in children?

just a few words on both:

growing teeth normally stars towards the end of the first year of life........didn't expect Noor to grow them this fast (or maybe i misunderstood the meaning of teething????)

as for fever: children getting fever can be seen as a 'good' sign that their body is functioning properly, and they have the ability to defend against foreign influences.
what is more alarming is if children actually develop undertemperature: this is a sign of more serious pathology.....

There are homeopathic and biochemic medicines that are fantastic for these problems. But you need to go to a doc who understands this type of medicine.

In Pakistan there are biochemic formulations that go by the name of "Bio Plasgen" - I don't think you can get them outside India and Pak (that was what the guy from Schwabe said - the german company that makes it). There is one specifically for teething that my cousin swore by. I found it too late!

The modern theories are for a non connection between teething and fevers. I think that it isn't directly connected but there is a connection between the vulnerability that comes when the body is under any sort of stress and the ease with which infections take hold. But if you're breastfeeding, be comforted, your milk will provide the most digestible nutrition while it also provides a good help from the immunological point of view.

i don't really have any experience with teething yet, I remember when my brothers were teething they always had these plastic rings in the freezer for them to chew on but thats about all I can remember.

Although I will be following this thread with interest to pick up any helpful advice which will probably come in handy pretty soon.

Aww poor thing, I remember from health class the teacher talking about how a gentle massage with your finger can sooth the pain for the baby, or the soother rings that shahreen mentioned.

If the baby starts teething at 4 months and it causes constant fevers than its best to take the baby for a dentist check up. Also once the teeth are in than they should be cleaned regularly and gently of course.

I have heard from other sources about the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines. Since my brother practices, I've asked him for a remedy to help ease the pain and other symptoms of teething. (Yes, Nescio, I mean growing teeth.) A friend in London has also recommended something either homeopathic or naturopathic. She is sending it with Ibrahim and I will post details when I get it next week inshallah.

In the past fever and diarhea (sp? I never could spell the word) were symptoms that were associated with teething, but as Shirin says, recently these theories have been refuted. I have heard only of a precious and lucky few that have managed to get their teeth without any signs of fever etc. Most of the kids that I have known have suffered from at least one of the two.

The books that I have read suggest that babies can get teeth from anywhere between 3 and 7 months.....so maybe Noor is a bit early, but not too advanced.

From what I have read and observed, there is no direct corelation between fever and teething. Pain yes. Fever no.

However, fever is mostly noticed on kids around that age, because that is also the age when the child starts crawling, and hence can have a lot of germs/dirt/bacteria from carpets, playing in the garden, floors and what not. At that age, some kids have the irresistable urge to put everything in their mouth, also because they are feeling irritation in gums due to teething and want to put something there to rub and make it better. So, previously people automatically assumed a correlation between fever and teething. Also, at the same time, some kids have tummy aches, diarhhea (sp?) and other problems associated with eating stuff which they are not supposed to put in their mouths.

Not sure if this theory is correct, but I didn't experience much of fever when the kids were teething. They were uncomfortable, but nothing which a small dosage of baby medicine can't cure.
