I was a tooth grinder for a while too. It turned out that my wisdom teeth were pushing the rest of my teeth forward. Once they grew in I stopped grinding. Meantime the rubber mouth guard worked pretty well.
Another thing you could try is a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, one brand is called Sensodyne. It really helps sensitivity to hot/cold.
