Technology makes you dumb?

alright, we all know how good technology is for us and how it benifits everyone. But there is also something to ponder abouot, does it make people dumb & lazy in general?

I am talking about tools available to us now. How many of you remember your tables? how about repeating 17th table in ur mind for a quick self test?
Similarly, how many of you work hard to improve your spellings & handwriting? and when was the last time you wrote two full length pages in your OWN hand writing?

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

Phone numbers are now stored in memory of cell phone , not in your own memory.

GPS remembers the address and all the turn instead of your own memory.

Instead of going out for jogging or a walk and enjoy the nature people run indoors on treadmill.

Sill batta , hawan dasta , chakki all are out of the house and electric grinders are used inside the homes.

In USA most of the desi women do not make roti , paratha or poori from scratch it is all available pre-cooked and fozen , just heat and eat.

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

I think about this a lot. My family and I went out of town for a little while and when we got to Boston, I had a GPS with me to put into whatever car we ended up renting. My dad was a bit amazed by it because he knows all the streets of Chicago and doesnt need a GPS, neither does my mom. They were reminiscing about the days when they first got to US and everytime they took a road trip, it was with a bunch of maps in hand and they made several stops to get directions. Thats how they learned the streets, highways, roads, etc. I can leave my mom anywhere in the city, she will be able to find her way home...sadly I possess the worst navigational skills known to man and have called her a million times panicking because I dont know where I am. Nowadays, you dont need to know anything if you have a GPS in your car. To a certain extent, I think its good but then bad too. It has made us lazy and some people dont even bother to make the effort to find out anything because they're so dependant on GPS. We've become soooooo dependant on these things.

Same thing goes for phone books like Mirch Bhai said. I dont know anymore #s by heart...they're all stored in my phone and I just look up the name and press send. Sometimes you dont even have to do that much because you can recall #s by voice.

One thing I will say about my house...we still make roti from scratch. My mom rarely buys naan and its only when we have guests over and she doesnt want to stand and make tons of rotiyan after already preparing a meal.

Its good that we're progressing but then you think of how our own senses and skills are being dulled because of all these conveniences made available to us. We dont write anything out anymore...its all typed. Personally, I need to outline my papers by hand though before I sit down and type something out.

I still remember my multiplication tables that we learned back in school. I use handwriting a lot still. Most of my work is done in hand writing. The last time I wrote two pages in my own hand writing was two days ago at a meeting.

Even as far as cell phone phone books go, I don't see them as being that different from traditional phone books. Instead of using a physical phonebook, I just use the digital one. I end up memorizing the numbers that I use often anyway, maybe just a little slower than when I was recording them in a book.

This is perhaps one thing where I feel I might be getting lazy, as I find myself using it more and more even when going to places that I already know pretty well. Before that, it was the maps from google, mapquest etc. At least for me, when I go to some place using either of these means, for the most part after the first time, I know the way fairly well, so I don't need them (at least not as much) the next time.

One thing that I have found very handy with the GPS is that sometimes it's difficult to see the name of a street, but the GPS will tell/show you where the street you're looking for is.

I myself work out on a treadmill. For me it's had the advantage that it's easier to stay consistent with your workout routine. When I used to try to walk outside, a lot of factors could deter me, like not wanting to go out at a certain time or the weather. Having one in the house had made it much easier to remain consistent.

These sound familiar, but I'm not even sure what they are.

The women in my family often still make these breads from scratch.

You mean "Paharray"...............they were named Paharray because of the amount of energy it took to learn them...................speaking of 17th paharra..

Uh Uhn..........Paharray stopped at 16th.............:D

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

I only learned up to 12 times table.
The numbers i call the most i can remember off hte top of my head. especially when I call that person and i get theri voicemail often which rattles off hte enire number..it gets stuck in my head.
I don’t drive, but I take the subway and I guess im pretty subway-saavy?
I don’t make rotis either, but my mom did..she tried to teach me too, i just haven’t gotten a chance to start practicing et. :hinna:

But I CAN remember ppls birthdays adn anniversaries (even ifhtey might not remember their own ) without having to use technology…

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

i’m a product (more like addict) of these tools and i’m reminded of that when I see my parents, my father can still calculate faster than me (in their time even a calculator was a luxury) my mother’s penmanship is beautiful, to this day she writes to me and all her grandkids (yes using good old snail mail not email!) sending birthday cards, right on time, little ‘miss you’ notes, although it takes ages for them to get here from Pakistan but the wait heightens the pleasure and anticiaption! my kids put them up and show them around like they would their fav toy!

when last yr they were visiting me, my father was amazed that we did not have a newspaper subscription, to him that was so uncivilized :bummer: he hated surfing the web for news, for him it killed the whole experience of getting the news, a time old ritual which starts the day right (we got a subscription right away for him!) my mother to this day hates cell phones, refuses to get one or use one, thinks of it more of a nuisance than a convenience, since my father keeps losing his! lol she has her good old dependable diary, which is probably as old as me!

LOL

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

i'm already dumb so i'm immune to technology related dumbness. only after coming to USA i bought a cell phone [actually wife bought it for me...]...and i used to work for motorola. i don't have any gadgets...like most ppl do. i do have a laptop and PC but i've never used my laptop. in fact wife has used it so much in the last 3-4 months that i have not used it in the last 4 years since i bought it. i don't have a car yet. but when i had one i still didn't used any GPS. did everything the old way...stop at places and ask for directions.

as for food and other stuff...i'm not at all concerned about that.

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

yeah, you depend very much on it. I think I will not need a GPS. I have a mobile, but 90 % of the numbers I have also stored in brain. Maybe it's because I use my mobile only as a diary for numbers. Either I make my calls from home or from the callbox!

besides that I'm really grateful towards Allah who has given me such a good memory. I barely use a calculator. I could never heat & eat. I'm a man of pleasure. I like to go for joggin, going out in the forrest, running through the nature and breathing fresh air.

It can be that 20-30 years ago, people had to drive alot, trains and busses were not able in the areas we have Today. If you wanted to go even from A-B you had to take a car. Today a Bus or a Train is available. Mostly they are faster. I sit in the ICE and I'm in Cologne in 1 hour 25 Minutes. A Car takes 2 hours! I think people who don't drive much, no wonder they need a GPS. I drive alot in our Area to know the streets and the places. I love driving. Maybe it's all better signposted here in Germany. Maybe America is not the country of the boundless opportunities!

Re: Technology makes you dumb?

^ maybe.. it takes 20 minutes to drive to jackson heights..by train 1.5 hours.

i forgot abt food, i hate hate hate those forzen pre-packaged meals. frozen veggies is ok..i got frozen rotis for myself and i like em..but hubby prefers the pita breads. even at my in laws, since it was a full house they used pita bread on a daily basis..even though my saas and jethanis all knew how to make the real thing...its just not reasonable to expect any of them to make fresh rotis for everyone everyday everytime.....
