Tech-savvy Punjab: CM approves free public Wi-Fi across Province

LAHORE: **Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave ****on Thursday **approval for free of charge public Wi-Fi facility across the province.

While presiding over a high-level meeting, the chief minister gave approval to various important measures for the promotion of information technology in the province.

According to the Khadim-e-Punjab Metro Wi-Fi Network Programme, free of charge Wi-Fi will be provided at** important educational institutions, hospitals, railway stations, airports, metro bus routes and bus stands, among other places.**

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said that the Metro Wi-Fi Network Programme will begin from Multan, Rawalpindi and Lahore, and eventually expand.

The purpose of this programme is to promote education in the province with the help of modern technology.

The chief minister also approved a proposal to provide tablets to teachers of mathematics and science subjects from Class-VI to X. Students of Class V to VIII of public sector schools who obtain prominent positions in annual examinations will also be given tablets.**

Shahbaz added that the Punjab Information Technology Board has also started the programme of digitalisation of textbooks with the cooperation of Punjab Textbooks Board.

“Punjab government has digitalised all science and mathematics textbooks from Grade 6 to 10, while CDs of the books have also been produced.”

I find it very interesting that such projects are announced by noon league but they almost never get started with the news that they would be finished or become fully operational in 6 months or 12 months etc.

Is Noon league only concerned/interested in making the 9 O clock news with announcement of the projects & they want to fool the awaam with just announcement news?

Also how often these projects benefit people outside the 30 miles radius of big cities? Pakistan is huge...so When are these project going to be successfully implemented punjab wide or Pakistan wide?

Would the CM consider approving Solar Energy project with an operational and successful completion within 12 months? Or perhaps a permanent subsidy in monthly bills for public until the Government can guarantee them basic facilities?

Great, I am sure everyone will be able to use it! Have they announced phones and laptop that do not require electrical charging as well? With load shedding that might be needed as well.

instead if giving free tablets to well performing students and faculty, they should simply build computer labs in government schools and allow all students access in a controlled environment. Or perhaps hire teachers to teach valuable computer skills that they can actually use in the future. Give a tablet to a adolescent boy and what is he going to do with it ?

Yet another promotional news. Desert bhai, havent you got sick of creating these useless threads, or are you on the payroll of sharif brothers. These showbaz sharif mega schemes have plunged an already bankrupt govt even deeper into debt. Even majority of first world countries dont have govt funded wifi. What purpose do these idiotic projects serve when the govt cannot even provide clean drinking water to millions of its people.

This is great suggestion, someone i knew gave the whole feasibility of E-libraries to SS and so what i heard ( have not seen it yet) there is considerable amount of work being done to make it reality. lets hope this actually happens.

Pakistani politicians are a fickle bunch. If it doesnt guarantee instantaneous brownie points with the their constituencies, it seems, they are less likely to do it.

Hoping they see reason and do whats beneficial for everyone.

The metro system admittedly is a much needed bit of infrastructure. Perhaps Wifi will entice more people into using the metro and thus raise revenue. They may be able to come up with some deal with internet providers to get a discount. Perhaps give them free advertising or something.
