New Delhi: Can Team India recreate the magic of 1983 and bring home the Cup of joy?

Riding high on soaring fan expectations and a series win against Sri Lanka, the Indian cricket team on Wednesday left for West Indies for Cricket World Cup 2007 beginning March 11.

The team left for the Windies by a 0240 hrs (IST) flight on Thursday for the ninth edition of the World Cup.

It will stop over in London en route to the Caribbean and will be based in Jamaica till the opening ceremony in Montego Bay on March 11.

The team will play two warm-up games against Holland and West Indies on March 6 and March 9 respectively and their first World Cup match in will be on March 17 against Bangladesh.

After months of build-up for the mega event, the men in blue seemed confident with skipper Rahul Dravid sending out a clear and an ominous signal to rivals, saying the team “fully equipped” to do well in Caribbean conditions.

“Playing in a World Cup is always special and the boys are ready,” Skipper Rahul Dravid told CNN-IBN as the Men in Blue boarded the bus.

A gala affair

But before the departure came the celebrations. The team was given a gala send-off dinner by the Board of Cricket Control in India.

The board also dedicated a new cola to the team in the glitzy event where a number of former cricketing legends sending in their wishes.

The dinner was accompanied by a music band and the guests comprised national selectors and officials, apart from Team India.

All of them were spotted relaxed, swaying to the peppy music, chatting, cracking jokes and savouring the food.

Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar – a member of India’s 1983 winning squad - appeared upbeat and heaped praises on the team.

“This is an excellent team. Man to man, our team is far superior to the other teams, but they have to put that into practice,” the former India captain was quoted as saying.

Dravid and coach Greg Chappell had addressed a farewell press conference at the board headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday afternoon with many team members,ex-cricketers and Bollywood personalities in attendance.

Out of the 15 players selected, only nine of them have experienced a World Cup while six - Robin Uthappa, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel and Sreesanth - will be appearing for the first time.

looking at the recent performance and individual players talent, I don't think ours is that bad! all they need to do is play their potential!

Re: Team India leave for the World Cup

Alright...good luck India :)

Re: Team India leave for the World Cup

India will have familiar conditions advantage and will do better than Pakistan's half-strength team. But I believe SL has more chances to appear in semi-finals.

**Zaheer wants to use slower ball in World Cup

**He is India's pace spearhead, but Zaheer Khan wants to use the slower ball as a weapon during next month's World Cup cricket in the West Indies.
Slower ball can be an "invaluable asset" on wickets such as those in the West Indies that are not responsive to fast bowlers, said the left-handed fast medium bowler who has been in excellent form since making a comeback to the team.
Zaheer also underlined the importance of cutting down on extras as vital to Team India's campaign in the World Cup hours before of the team's departure to the West Indies.
"I think it would be absolutely key to team's plan to cut down on extras in the World Cup," Zaheer told PTI in an interview.

"When you overstep or bowl wide, you present the opposition with an extra ball and a run which can have a huge influence in the outcome of the game."
Zaheer's recent run is a testimony of how closely he follows the belief he advocates so strongly. The Mumbai paceman has played 10 one-day matches since the tour to South Africa and conceded just nine wides and two no-balls, a shade over an extra a match.
Zaheer has experienced the entire gamut of emotions in his career of seven years during which he made a fairytale debut, rose to be the front rank bowler before injuries and poor form, not to speak of indifference by the team management, appeared to have ground his career to a halt.
He has now reclaimed the position in the side and his insights on the eve of his second representation in World Cups speak about a man in know of his craft.

:D

apart from Zaheer, I do hope Irfan too can regain his rhythm, he can also bowl good slower deliveries...problem with slower delivery is that if bowler mistakes the length..it ends up as a boundary!

Re: Team India leave for the World Cup

Sir Agarkar and his earth-shattering spell of ten overs will vouch for that statement.

Re: Team India leave for the World Cup

^ :smilestar: ..you should know Agarkar has got special blessings from “Pawarfull” BCCI!..you are going against BCCI law.

Re: Team India leave for the World Cup

The Indian cricket team arrived in West Indies with hopes of reclaiming the World Cup after nearly a quarter century.
