Centurion (Mar 13): India has two “batting captains”, two “bowling captains”, two “fielding captains” and Sourav Ganguly, the real skipper — making as many as seven “captains”.

As commentators the world over analyse the remarkable resurgence of the Indian team, the official website of the tournament today came out with an unusual explanation for India’s march into the semi-finals.

Players encouraging each other and the ‘Great Indian Huddle’ after the fall of every wicket are just the visible features of their campaign. What remains from the public gaze is the fact that the team is actually led not just by Sourav Ganguly, but also by six other players.

The team, after long deliberations, has appointed two “batting captains”, two “bowling captains” and two “fielding captains,” the website said.

These six “captains” convey to the rest what is expected of them in the next game as the players do their nets.

Senior members Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid head the batting department, while Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble oversee the bowlers’ performance during the training sessions. Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif take care of the fielding department.

As the squad takes the field for training and nets, young turks Yuvraj and Kaif do not hesitate to pull up the seniors for any loose fielding during the nets, while Srinath and Kumble don the mantle as the bowling coaches for the side.

Similarly, Sachin and Dravid give valuable tips to their team mates on batting.

The final meeting, held on the eve of every match, is however supervised by skipper Sourav Ganguly and coach John Wright, the website said.

These innovative techniques introduced by Wright and Ganguly have definitely worked wonders for the team and is evident from their successful campaign for the World Cup.

Well good for them if they are taking new initiatives, but sometimes it's just a case of hitting form at the right time. When the confidence was low they crumbled pretty badly against Australia.

True..
It all comes down to confidence. One can see how team is playing now.Initially only Sachin won the matches but now other batsmen and bowlers are doing wonders.See matches against SL and NZL today.

If sachin is not doing good someone like Ganguly,Yuvraj or Kaif fills in .

Well, It's well and good against Kenya and NZ, I think they need to show this against Australia too.

Asif bhai Kenya ko harao gey tub Australia say milo gay. :)

Oops Sorry - I forgot that We still have to play the semifinals. :)

don't know about you, but sounds pretty gay to me. shrugs

I thought that a "captain" is "in field", while in nets you can be a "coach". Its good that they are coaching each other of what they know better.

Mate, you can have eleven captains, no forget that you could have the whole of india captaining for you i,e the billion + people you have, but you still aint gona beat Australia and they only have one captain.

sorry bro, I'm not an Indian fan, but our big mouths have been shut by our own team, lets not be big mouth for some other team. lets keep it low, just say "let the better team win". you can continue to support Australia, but its cricket, we don't know till the last ball, right?

I think Cairns also said something like "I'll target Tendulkar", I don't know who got his wicket, but Indian team had the last laugh.

How do you know? You just say that because you don't like india. I bet you said the same thing about India not beating Pakistan because Shoib was going to bowl at 100 light years! Or Inzamma was going to hit a six from SA to NA

You sound like a kid in the playground with his shoe laces undone and tripping over with tantrums while your knees are bleeding.....

I didnt mention shoaib bowling at 100 mph and I aint a fan of his. I also didnt mention Inzamam (not inzamma) hitting a six. All I'm saying is Indians just get carried away a bit too much, with all this crap about 7 captains. Its all crap to me. A team's captain should be good enough to control the whole team, afterall thats what a captains job is.

A captain should show authority. Fair enough your team is working with each other and encouraging each other, but 7 captains??? shabaash!!
