Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

India seriously needs to tackle these problems. It touts it self as this great “democracy” and hi-tech place but in reality it faces big hurdels and with a growing population, those problems are only going to grow

BHANDARA: Caste corrupts civil society even in the 21st century. A so-called upper caste lady teacher at a Zilla Parishad higher middle school in Surewada village, about nine km from Bhandara city, sprinkled ‘gomutra’ (cow’s urine) on students and inside the classrooms to “purify’’ them and drive out an “evil spirit’’ from the premises earlier this month.

The ZP school runs classes from first to seventh standard and has 210 students, including 20 Dalit students. Last month, Tilottama Tembhurkar, headmistress of the school, who belongs to a ‘lower’ caste, was transferred but not relieved of her charge. However, teachers from the upper caste believed that Tembhurkar’s presence was inauspicious for the school.

In the last week of March, Tembhurkar handed over charge to senior teacher Sharad Kaitade (an upper caste). In early April, when he formally took over as the school headmaster, Kaitade allegedly performed a puja in the school and asked a lady teacher Madhavi Raut to sprinkle gomutra inside the classes and school premises.

Raut promptly went around the school premises and classes sprinkling cow urine—while the students were appearing for their annual exam. She entered the class where Dalit students were also solving the question paper.

Raut allegedly asked the Dalit students to get up and sprinkled ‘gomutra’ on them, saying it would “purify’’ them. However, while doing so, some of it fell on the answersheets and the students’ faces too. Feeling humiliated, the students narrated the incident to their parents, who along with other villagers, registered a protest with Kaitade. Subsequently, he and Raut, both tendered apologies to the irate villagers and assured such an incident would not recur. But the villagers wanted a written apology, which the teachers refused.

The villagers then approached the district collector and superintendent of police, Bhandara, demanding action against the erring headmaster and lady teacher. The administration ordered a probe into the incident. The police personnel interrogated the headmaster, Raut, other teachers and also met the students and their parents. Finding substance in the villagers’ complaint, an offence was registered against Kaitade under Section 7, 1(D) of the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1985. He was arrested and later released on bail.

okay.....besides you didn't read that they were arrested, though have released on bail. By your logic in america is not a great democracy as crimes do happen there also. And i know this is not going to convince you. West (land of goras)perceives india as a democracy with which you are very uncomfortable.

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

Besides last time you said times of india is anti-muslim.....now how come they are covering this?...

In your case, if an indian newspaper tells some negative news about muslims, you will say it is anti-muslim, if it is western media then it becomes correct.

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

errrrrr....ganda

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

Committing crimes and state sponsored discrimination is a whole another issue

West preceives India as a democracy because it is the great brown hope and besides mostly white countries, there is no other country which has a democracy and so no matter how corrupt or dysfunctional, India is called a democracy to show the world that democracy is not a white only concept

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

Are Dalits Muslims?

No and so they cover this....

But ya, Times of India is the most anti-muslim paper in India

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

^ india is a sick place.

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

how can it be state sponsored. Did indian govt made a rule that if a dalit goes to one place it should be purified by sprinkling cow urine, or is it there in indian constitution.
If it wasnt democracy then this would not have come out in the open. Were there foreign media covering this. :)

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

come on man, it was times of India, indian express, and the Hindu which are so anti modi and anti rss. Out of the above times of India is the one which gives too much time to sensationalize a topic.

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

^^ Ya thats because this concerned Dalits....

I am not saying that all Indian Media is anti-Muslim. The Hindu is among the most neutral papers when it comes to Muslims and Pakistan

But Times of India, that is the Fox News of India

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

It becomes state sponsored when the government turns a blind eye to this and doesn't take any action against this behavior akin to KKK lynching black people in the South. Although the government was against this, the Southern Governors turned a blind eye to these crimes and thus were complicit.

Democracy doesn't guarantee free press. Pakistan is not a total democracy but it has a free press.

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

Who cares whatg Indians are doing? Lets stick to things that concern Pakistan, and let India be. Whats the point of this thread? To highlight something we alread knew but didnt care about?

Re: Teacher sprinkles cow urine to 'purify' Dalit kids in India

In the above mentioned incident, action have been taken and the govt didnt turns a blind eye to the incident.
kudos to the people who stood up against the discrimination.
