New Delhi - A New Delhi court convicted a schoolteacher for parading a student from a low-caste family naked in front of his peers for three hours nearly a decade ago, said a report on Tuesday.
PC Gupta, who was the vice-principal of a government school in the capital New Delhi in 1997, was charged with dishonouring the dignity of a person, causing injury, criminal intimidation and the use of criminal force, reported the Times of India.
Criminal cases have been known to take decades in India’s clogged judicial system due to a shortage of judges and a mammoth backlog of cases.
Sentencing, for what the newspaper said was a rare conviction of a teacher for punishment of a child, will be handed out on Monday.
The pupil was humiliated and chided for being a sweeper’s son, a low-caste job in the Hindu religion, because he took a dip in the school water tank on a summer afternoon while the school was in session, said the report.
The boy dropped out of school after the abuse and now works as a factory
Caste discrimination is very very rampant in India but goes unreported.
Far worse than this happens to low castes, I once watched a documentory and it brought tears to my eyes, the low castes were starving and only when the highcastes got field mice would they allow the low castes to kill them and eat them, they used them as pest control..

When did you watched? Provide me your this "documentary", I am also just curious to watch.
I still can't figure out in 2007 when so called Dalit saviors of India like Mayawati, Athawale, Ambedkar followers etc. and their coteries are there to grab any opportunity for Dalit vote bank, how come such an incident as noticed in your "documentary" never resulted in a bandh or strike in India?
Matrubhoomi,
It is true that caste based discrimination is very strong in India. But sometimes people will rarely provide a link or evidence to what they have seen.
i dont know all that happen but surely the school water tank is not a swmming pool and the kids clothes must have been unwearable if he had chose to bathe with them on. the teacher should have allowed the kid to be or remain dressed but this story is not as bad as it sounds at first.:)
Well it must have taken around 3 hours for the clothes to get dry while kid walked naked ;) (sarcasm). Well - child should have been given warning / parents called / fines etc whatever other possible form of punishment but - nanga karwa kar sab kay samnay phirana - come on he was a human, its was like killing his selfesteem.
One made a mistake & other treated him like an animal, both at fault, but one is punished more than he deserved (the child).
man teaching profession is twisted... if there is no physical punishment allowed, then students make life hell for the teacher. If the teacher is allowed some punishment, he makes sure students lives are made hell. In pakistan, teachers really abuse the students, whereas here in the western countries students give teachers such hard time somtime they are ready to cry. All they can do is yell which makes no difference to the rogue characters.

Thats surprising that he got convicted but then he is in the capital city...
In rural areas it is perfectly ok to disrespect and humiliate those oif a lower caste...read anything about the Dalits and you will see that even animals have more rights than them...
