This is what I found on a forum at John Hopkins CEnter for TB Research:
[quote]
Tuberculosis of the intestinal tract is an uncommon and often elusive form of the disease with culture diagnosis being the gold standard. Diagnosis may be difficult due to varied manifestations, limited accessibility to noninvasive culture sites and similar findings to an array of other disorders. Disease may be in association with chronic pulmonary TB and it is believed that chronic ingestion of massive numbers of bacilli from the sputum may result in infection of the bowel. Laproscopic procedures or paracentesis are the diagnostic procedures of choice depending on the suspected location of infection. A history of TB infection may lend support to the diagnosis but does not rule out active disease. Management of disease is with standard chemotherapy given for at least 6 months, preferably via directly observed therapy.

I didn't know there was any such thing.
Tuberculosis is a very common disease in Pakistan but most of the people think its a disease related to respiratory system only. While its true that two forms of TB are quite common, lung and the abdominal.Former one is much more common than the later though. It is also a fact that Tuberculosis if God forbid converts to its Miliary form , the bacteria causing it i.e. Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, can reach to any part of the body through blood stream and can erode and damage that particular area of the body, which can be bones, joints, central nervous system etc .
So usually it reaches the intestine by ingesting the effected sputum,if someone is suffering from Lung TB.But it can also occur as an individual disease.Lung Tb spreads like anything, very contagious,it can effect each and every member of the family if proper care is not undertaken.I have seen paretns with their 9 kids visiting Tb clinic, all of them used to acquire the disease and they were being undertreatment, when i was working at civil Hospital karachi.
There could be acute pain associated with intestinal TB,abdominal pain, low grade fever, constipation or diarrhea,in later stages there could be a lump formation in the intestine. It can also effect liver in later stages.
Diagnosis is usually made by culture and identifying organism.
Treat ment is very effective and practical. It can completely heal and permanantly remove the bacteria.its usually a 6 months course of taking different medicines orally,we call it Chemotherapy :-)
I hope this would help you khawateen. I dont think you need to be too much worried :)
BTW who is sick?
Just to add, weight loss is a very important symptom of tuberculosis, whether it be lung or intestinal Tb !!
