Taxi VS Uber

The fight is taking its toll on Toronto…

Cab driver pounds on UberX car, dragged 20 metres in Toronto protest - Toronto - CBC News

Unfortunately the way the taxi drivers are expressing themselves is leading more and more people to support Uber. Seems their protests are backfiring.

What’s your opinion? Uber or Taxi?

Re: Taxi VS Uber

i was in India recently and i used OLA taxis [similar to Uber] and i found it to be good but locals warned me of the safety issues. a few cases were reported where women were attacked.

same here, i would be concerned about safety and security, especially, lone women using it at wee hours of night.

HUGE in Chicago as well.

Taxi drivers have to jump through so many hoops in order to obtain a license... Uber - nothing. It's unfair... and people in Chicago are pissed off partly cos the Mayor has close ties to Uber so he's letting everything slide (his brother has huge shares). NYC tackled the problem by banning Uber in Manhattan... i think to even the playing ground other major cities should do the same. And they don't do thorough background checks... so, that's pretty scary too. Loads of legal issues for Uber down the road.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Uber.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Uber ftw. Cheaper, more convenient and the drivers tend to be a lot politer.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Knowing what it takes to get a medallion in NYC and Chicago, I think uber model is unfair. Most uber drivers have a full-time job. For cabbies, this is their only source of income.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Uber's development is so organic. I wonder how this would turn out.
Its like chooran seller fighting oranges and apples. or some thing like that.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Tough call.

Taxi for the reasons the Chicago lady so eloquently laid out. And also anotyer veteran member.

And F that Rahm Emanuel.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

from the metros/transits I opt for the taxi rank - as such uber is banned from most of the spots

for the rest I use Uber - Uber offers unmatchable flexibility at this point. its just not the cost points - even for official travel I use Uber.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Uber hands down. I use it all the time to airport (not from b/c most airports don't allow Uber pick ups). Uber drivers are much more polite, friendly, and their cars are much cleaner and don't smell like sweat and pi$$. Oh, and they are half of the cost of taxis.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Big Uber supporter here! In Texas, we don't have taxis on every street and need to call a general number to get one. Every frigging time I've used taxis, the "wait time" the operator quotes is never correct. Trying to get a taxi on a Friday/Saturday night.....easily 30 min+ wait. The Uber app on the other hand is beyond amazing! My "wait time" with Uber is usually 5 minutes or less! I LOVE that the driver's call or text me to let me know they're here as opposed to me standing outside and waiting for the damn taxi.

^ THIS! In addition to being convenient, the fact remains that Uber driver's have better manners and the cars are much cleaner since it's their personal car. If taxi drivers aren't happy about the competition, they need to step-up their game and give customers what we want.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Same here...we're a big Uber family. My husband had to catch a flight out of town the same night as our son's band concert....taxis are not that common here in Dallas but Uber is godsend...he got picked up from the school in minutes and was on his way and I didn't have to worry about leaving early to drop him or him missing out on the concert nor did we have to hassle with taking two cars and then him using park and ride.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

I know nothing about this industry and the regulations that govern it. Help me understand....

Why is it so difficult to get a medallion?

Re: Taxi VS Uber

My dad has been on both sides of the fence on this. He used to drive a cab in chicago and now drives uber. He still has a city of chicago cab license. According to him only the big companies can afford a medallion. There are a lot of licensed city cab drivers jumping over to uber since now drivers are able to keep the money they make to themselves instead of paying the big cab companies.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

^ True about medallions. But again... Uber drivers don't have to go through ANY regulation. U just sign up and drive... why should cab drivers have to take medical exams/renew their professional license/extensive background checks etc etc every year? In fact in order to get a license, they have to take a 3 or 4 week course and pay for the exam. It is a hassle. And cab companies, and individual cab owners, pay A LOT of money to keep their cars within city regulations (inspections every 6 months or something like that)

Also, Uber doesn't have insurance in case of accidents. That's why they will face a lot of legal issues in the future (they've already got a couple of cases, most prominent was in Texas i think... a small girl died cos Uber driver rode up on the curb). As for customer service.. it has been a hit or miss with Uber.

At the end of the day... idk about other major cities but Rahm Emanuel has created a mess in Chicago. The fact is his brother has made hundreds of millions of dollars cos Emanuel allowed Uber access to everything with no barrier. The city is flooded with Uber cars.. 70,000 Uber drivers! It's ridiculous. My husband works with a couple of accountants and lawyers and the majority of their clients are taxi drivers... when my husband first came here he drove one too. It's a source of income for a lot of people and it's suddenly vanished.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

this gem needed a quote.

and uber. 100% positive experiences vs. like 5% with cabbies who have all kinds of attitude issues.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

Does anybody know how much is a medallion these days?

Re: Taxi VS Uber

My dad and others still go through the ordeal every year as they have decided to keep their cab license.

Uber has insurance covering the riders and others up to a million.

I dont know about Chicago but in Houston the city makes the uber drivers take a medical and go through a more extensive background check that the city does. They also have to go trough car inspections and a mileage cap which the cabs dont have.

I have driven uber in the beginning when it started in Houston. Thats how I know about the workings. That accident was in San Fransisco.

Re: Taxi VS Uber

It used to $300,000 in chicago when I was there. 2002-2003

My dad's best friend owns 15...went up near to $350,000 in Chicago.... now i think it's down to about $150,000... and that's like maxing it out.
