How much do they usually make? Because the Pakistani families that I know, with a single income, usually a taxi or limo driver, are veryyyyy well off. When I was in high school I remember these girls always had the nicest clothes, most expensive jackets, over five pairs of brand name sneakers, whereas I had nice stuff but nowhere near as pricey or as numerous as theirs… and when I asked what their dads did, they always told me they drove a taxi or limo (lincoln town car). On top of that, they had nice cars, private houses, all that in BROOKLYN, which is pretty expensive! My dad has a very good job, but honestly speaking its hard to really splurge on stuff the way these people did.
I’m asking all this because I know a family who recently moved to New York from Pakistan (maybe 6 years ago) and the guy was a cab driver, and today my cousin was telling me that that family just bought a 3 bedroom house in sheepshead bay, brooklyn, which is a pretty well to do neighborhood… it baffles me… I dont get it… how!!!
Is it a good job, I mean how much would someone make working about 6 days a week in that job, and do they get special benefits… what is it that they do to earn all that money!!!
The beauty of driving a cab is that you are your own Boss. You shape your own working hours, feeling numb and along for the ride, call quit to your working day and go back home to sleep in your cosy blanket . A luxury 9-5 office workers cant enjoy.
In big cities , if working full time as a cabbie they normally make around 200 to 300 $/£ a day excluding gas and other expenses . This may goes up 500 to 700 on a dark , nippy weekend night , when people end at about 2.30 to 3-ish on the cold and crowded streets around City Hall..
But money brings its own sorrows and agony . As a cabbie you end up working unsocial hours where some times you gotta do some extra mileage to meet some of your expenses. This insurance yoke is on bit high side , Here for the first time you will be paying around 6000 to 8000 per year for insurance only .
Then security factor kicks in . Next time you ride a taxi, ask your fella about it , he may comes up with a bloodcurdling story.
They seem to make a good living but that suffering has its own dolor and pangs .
P.s: I know what you all thinking , oiii I don’t drive a yoke for living I was involved in a prepaid taxi card project ( my poor brainchild) which didn’t work out well :hinna:
From what I know, it is a very lucrative business. One can make a lot of money in a week and take month off. Moreover, the timings are adjustable if you are studying or have a family.
Problem is that sometimes to make big money you have work in the holidays and night. Also, one has to be careful about certain neighborhoods because of security.
It is not for everyone, but if you are willing to put with the drunk customoers and strange working hours, you will do well.
Its more about retaining money than making money when it comes to cabbies. How much ever money they make all cab drivers show minimal income when it comes to tax returns. I have yet to see a tax return showing more than 24-27k as gross adjusted income for a cab driver. They write off a lot in expenses and thus barely pay any taxes and get to keep most of what they earned if not all.
