Do the rules of politeness apply to online discourse or is it, every online nick to himself where ignorance and ill-manners prevail? Do we have an obligation to be respectful or at least civil to others online or not?

Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
I like to be what I am...I mean I like to present myself the same way online and offline.

Aap to bohut achi hain aure yakeenan are the same in real life :)
But does that mean that means people who are obnoxious, ill-mannered and offensive online must be as argumentative and badtameez offline as well?

That.
I am the same online as I am offline
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
Sehrysh I'm quite sure. Except for some random moments where we like to have fun and pretend to be something else.
I think it would be hard to be consistently something else...dunno...

Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
I'm generally more politer in real life than I am online.
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
What aggravates things is that you can't see the other person's facial expressions....and that leaves greater room for not only interpreation but also misunderstandings and negative assumptions. However, if a particular behavior occurs frequently, it's harder to give the benefit of the doubt.
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
I like to think that if many of the obnoxious posters/flamers behaved like that in real life, they'd be getting punched in the face on an hourly basis.

:D
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
I have a feeling people online are more prone to impolite, obnoxious behviour ! No consequences of being punched in the face like somebody said earlier :D the relatively anonymous identities too make them a bit 'sher'
...and also the pen is mightier than the sword :p (in our case our keypad/keyboard) ;)
interestingly I made an observation. The personality test results for a lot of posters who are very active here showed they were more towards the introvert side ...hmmm interesting (that obviously doesn't mean they are obnoxious or anything! )
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
Sometimes I talk and joke more online than in real life, but I'm mostly as polite (and sometimes as upset and temporarily crazy) in real life as I am online.
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
I don't change online.......... and we should be respectful and civil to everyone... whether online or offline means in real life
Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations…
It means you are like that in real life too!!

Re: Tameez/good manners and online conversations...
You are required by GS law to be civil to others so where's the question. :p
