Let the country be governed by penal laws of the country and we must stick to condemning these nut case individuals who have taken the law in their own hands.
Please do not try to advocate these people in the name of hudood laws for a second even. They are criminals and should be considered as such in our society. No need to glorify them.

frankly i dont know much about islamic laws but to the extent i know they are logical, they have very difficult pre requisites before administering the punishment ISLAMIC laws are not just hudood laws it is irony that islam for our mullahs and many aalims start with alcohal and ends at women.
take for example banking/trade laws but we have not bothered to implement them atleast that is a perfect system.
furthermore these sharia/islamic laws existed when west was in dark ages , islamic world was a jewel, under these laws there was ghazali , rumi, sheikh saadi and many scholars lived now because others think these are barbaric do you want me to belive them , first show me a proper working alternate.
where was there civility when palestenian were being killed phosphorous bombs recently, 100000s of them killed in iraq and bush retiring with grace no one in their system asking for accountability just because its their self serving system.
irony with us we may not be able to see islamic system with its essence implemented because we are not ready for it intellectually , our religious scholars mostly are jahils, they dont agree with each other and are corrupt, shortsighted as well.

I disagree with flogging as it was meant for different times. However, I realize many muslims don't agree with my interpretation and this is fine. If flogging is to be a punishment it must be done with a proper and functioning court system (not the clown CJ ifti court or jaahil qazi courts of swat) and in as humane a manner as possible.

You are second person who is suggesting that flogging was meant for different time, if this punishment was for a time-specific then we might have some context or hint in other verses. How do you suggest that it was for different times?
I agree with you completely that the justice we saw in the video is a complete mockery of justice system. This is more like a jirga system using Islamic punishments without proper trial.

A functioning court not full of corrupt judges and lawyers not mired in colonial bureaucracy, and that goes for any pakistani institution today.

Quran is not a history book, though it does have references to some stories for lessons from past. It contains rules and regulations for Muslims, one needs to read to do learn that.
Sharia applies to believers, unless believers stop believing in Islam and want to do away with punishments prescribed in Quran. Objecting on the judicial process of Taliban and how they execute is one thing while objecting on the prescribed punishments is different altogether IMO.
These sharia punishments apply to a state which has adopted Islam as a state religion, and do not apply in a state where followers of every religion have freedom to choose and practice their religions without state interference. It was 6th century where a state could adopt an official religion as the conditions during that time were nearly in every state the religion was enforced by the state.
In these modern times it is considered barbaric not to give religious freedom to the citizens. Take the example of Pakistan. We have Muslims, Christains, Hindus, Parsis, and people of different religions who by law are all equal in the eyes of the state. Amongst Muslims there are different sects with people with different interpretations of sharia. Which sharia can you apply here.
So it is essential for any state to define and separate clearly the religion from the affairs of the state. If in present modern times it is impossible for a state to adopt a religion than there is no question of Sharia punishments as it is only for a state with Islam as a state religion. It is not a question of critising Quran, it is simply being realistic that those conditions which existed in 6th century do not apply in modern times. Even Quran gave different instructions to the Holy Prophet as the conditions and situations changed during his prophetic life.
I don't think Islam wants you to denounce logic and submit to the sect with gun power. Neither do I think Islam is not compatible with modern times like the clergy is presenting Islam to the world. Modern times need modern thinkers of Islam with understanding of the present world and Islam both. Otherwise my friend Islam will be considered a medieval religion followed by the most backward people on the face of this earth.
