Taliban 'openly raising funds' in Pakistani Punjab

A Pakistani intelligence report says militants are publicly raising funds in Punjab province, the BBC has learned.

The disclosure comes amid reports of an increased Taliban presence in this politically important province.

The report says at least 17 banned militant groups are operating in the province under different names.

They are raising donations through religious gatherings, certificate award ceremonies and meetings held in the name of social welfare, it says.

Punjab is Pakistan’s most populous province and is home to more than half of the country’s 160 million people.

It is the country’s bread basket and houses most of its industry.

It also supplies the bulk of personnel to Pakistan’s military, civil service and political class.

In recent years, militants have carried out dozens of attacks against civil and military targets in Punjab.
‘Punjabi Taliban’

Officials blame these attacks mostly on the so-called “Punjabi Taliban” affiliated with anti-Pakistan Taliban groups based in the country’s north-western tribal areas.

A source in the interior ministry told the BBC that the latest intelligence report names at least 17 proscribed organisations that are raising funds in Punjab.

Their activities are more pronounced in the cities of Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Pind Dadan Khan, Mandi Bahauddin, Kharian, Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

The report identifies the most active among these groups as the Ghazi Force, named after a top cleric of Islamabad’s Red Mosque who was killed during a siege of the mosque by security forces in 2007.

It says the group has close working relations with Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella group of anti-Pakistan militants whose leadership is based in the North Waziristan tribal region.

The report reveals that members of Ghazi Force have carried out several attacks against government targets in Punjab with the support of the Taliban.

It says militants are spreading out across Punjab and other areas of the country because of military operations targeting their bases in the tribal areas.

The groups are also trying to set up networks in the southern province of Sindh, it says.

The report stresses that the intelligence wing of the police, the Special Branch, needs to be properly equipped to deal with the growing menace.

The provinces of Punjab and Sindh have earmarked a combined amount of 80 billion rupees ($941m) in the current budget to improve salaries of policemen and equip them with modern technology.

Are you for it or are you against it??

Re: Taliban 'openly raising funds' in Pakistani Punjab

I don't support the taliban or any extremist groups.

pathetic!..n even more pathetic the people who r funding them

The fact remains that the militant groups were entrenched with the Punjab-political class under Zia's administration. Nawaz Sharif and PML(N) are product of that era so naturally they find it difficult to break off their ties with taliban and extreme-right wing groups.

The best answer is to simply vote them (PML(N)) out of Punjab and for the subsequent government to eliminate the militant training camps and their insane leadership.

^^ and let Tehrik-e-Insaf play the role of PML (N)....

Re: Taliban 'openly raising funds' in Pakistani Punjab

ITS out of control ANd no one knows whats hapening 1nce talliban killed and then they again grow up its all monoply of govt

That is correct. When it comes to support of Talibanic mentality, Imran is worse than PMLN. He says that he does not support Taliban, but his actions speak louder than words. He was for dialog with them even though they had just broken their promises in Sawat, and even when they were killing Pakistan Army and police personnel, and blowing up civilians.
Usually it is hard to differentiate between statements from PTI and Jamat e Islami.

Unfortunately, Shahbaz Sharif and his law minister refuse to believe that these militants are any serious concern. The Law Minister Rana Sanaullah actually went in political rallies with militants, and later instead of apologizing for it, he defended the militants.

Punjab government's inaction against militants is causing insecurity not just in Punjab but also in other parts of country.

This is why I say that PMLN is a security risk for Pakistan. PMLN at least needs to remove Rana Sanaullah from his post if it wants to prove that it is against militancy in Pakistan.

In Karachi’s crowded neighborhoods, jihadist enrollment and extremist fundraising continue despite the successes of a city police force and intelligence network that’s arrested hundreds of suspects in recent years.

Instead of looking at these fanatics from nationalist point of view, what is required is to see them as what they are to all of Pakistanis: a common enemy of ALL Pakistanis.
A fanatic is a fasadi regardless of which nationality he belongs to. And it is the duty of every Pakistani to stop this Evil.

There has always been Talibanic presence in Karachi, but it has increased after the Army put pressure on them in FATA. They are now coming to Karachi to hide and for respite. They are also involved in robberies and kidnappings to fund their fanatic movement.

but if Altaf Hussein had said ‘Taaalibaaaniiization of Kaaraaaachi’ you would’ve denied that :hehe:

Whats wrong if taliban is raising funds in Pakistan????

After all, Pakistan is one of the 3 countries (other are Saudi Arabia and UAE) in the world that recognises Tabliban govt in Afghanistan.

If Pak govt recognise Taliban govt then what problem do you have if they raise funds from the same country that recognises them???

Re: Taliban 'openly raising funds' in Pakistani Punjab

^^ The problem we have is that india is using pakistani soil for terror acts thrugh talibans. they exploiting them to use pak soil to grow, get financial support through robberies in pak households & cause terror on the same pakistani soil & same pakistani people whose money they rob.

The real player is india which talibans have no brain to understand. The only thing pakistan can do is warn india to stop this hypcritical drama. peace flags in their hands but indians involved in every single thing which helps them with destabalizing pakistan. pakistan government must shun their lies, they are not trust worthy. we do have a problem with india playing double in every single matter with pakistan.

pak government needs to recognize indian munafiqat.

Altaf Hussain conspiring with the Taliban

They no longer recognize them my friend, you're talking pre-2001!
