Taliban, Karachi and Banks

Taliban have used all kind of violence against businesses that consider against their Sharia. They used bombings, murders and death threats against poor barbers, CD shops, internet cafes, artists, singers and actors, schools, shrines and anyhtings to do with music. However, they have not been that vocal and aggresive against financial institutions like banks. This article points out that it might be because robbing and looting banks is a source of revenue for them and they are not going to close them down despite banks being an interest based system!

Karachi

In the first week of April this year, the Crime Investigation Department of Karachi police busted a gang of five criminals, who were allegedly involved in various criminal activities, ranging from armed attacks on security forces to bank robberies and dacoities and kidnapping for ransom in Karachi. During interrogation, these five men, Sarfraz, Faisal, Akbar, Farid and Dur Muhammad Baloch revealed that they were actually religious militants, belonging to Laskhar-e-Jhangvi, a sectarian militant group associated with the Taliban.

They claimed that they were not “professional criminals”, and were committing these crimes to meet financial requirements of their organizations, fighting Pakistani security forces in FATA tribal area and some other parts of NWFP. This is a trend that is worrying local security agencies.

At the time of the arrest, CCPO Karachi Wasim Ahmed proudly presented the case before the media at a press conference at the Central Police Office (CPO) and said it was a great achievement for not only the law enforcing agencies but also for the people of Karachi. “These (criminals) belonging to the tribal areas said there were Fatwas issued by their religious mentors, sitting in the tribal areas, allowing them to loot banks and other financial institutions involved in interest-based transactions “ a senior CID Karachi official, requesting anonymity told The News.

The official, who has investigated several crimes of kidnapping for ransom that took place in the city during the past one and half years, said the investigation revealed startling facts about the rationale, thinking and modus ope***** and activities of the extremists. “They believe that depriving industrialists of their money through kidnapping and extortion, robbing banks and convoys carrying fuel and other goods to US and NATO forces in Afghanistan is a rightful act” the police official told The News.

He said the arrested extremists said they were entrusted with the task if generating money from larger cities like Karachi as money was constantly required to fund the holy war and pay for ammunition as well as explosives as well as salaries to holy warriors and their families. In this regard, he cited the name of Qasim Toori, an activist of Jandullah, who confessed to robbing of a bank for the same reason. The kidnappers of film producer and distributor Satish Anand, who was taken to Waziristan by the militants also made a similar confession. What is worrisome in the Satish Anand case was the involvement of retired military officers.

“Besides these two cases, there were other instances where it was found out that extremists and militants kidnapped industrialists or threatened them of abduction and extorted money, which was later sent to tribal areas” claimed the police official. He said involvement of persons and security guards belonging to tribal areas, especially in the high profile bank robberies in Karachi like the one at H&H Exchange Company in which over Rs. 140 million were looted authenticated the suspicions of the investigators.

Even the Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza, who strongly rejects presence of the Taliban in Karachi and Sindh, admitted at a meeting thismonth that a few militant elements having association with Taliban were involved in criminal activities in Karachi.

“There is no evidence that Taliban are present or planning to get active in Karachi but yes, there instances when law enforcing agencies detected some criminals having links with the Taliban or other extremist groups involved in crimes to generate money” he told a press conference at CM House earlier this month. When contacted. the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Spokesman in Malakand division, Haji Muslim Khan rejected these allegations saying it was part of propaganda against them to defame them. “Those fighting and struggling for implementation of Shariah can’t do any such activities as it just the propaganda on the behest of US and British governments to defame Taliban and religious people in the eyes of common Pakistanis” he told The News over the phone.

He said those making such allegations should prove their claims providing evidences otherwise they “would have to answer for their lies before Almighty.” The Taliban have eradicated criminal gangs and kidnappers in their controlled areas as they believe in peace and in value of human lives property of the common people, Muslim Khan said. Another angle given by Karachi-based trader from FATA, Abdul Qayyum was that militants fighting in tribal areas and NWFP were getting funds from Karachi and other major cities of Pakistan but said they were in fact getting funds from people who originally belonged to the tribal areas.

“I know that they get funds from Karachi, collected from local influential and wealthy parties who hail from tribal areas but all that is done voluntarily” he claimed. Qayyum said that there was no involvement of militants in criminal activities for generating funds commenting that actually the criminals from the tribal areas were committing robberies, dacoities and kidnappings for last couple of decades but they had nothing to do with the Taliban or other religious groups.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

Thanks for posting this. The jihadi network is deep and vast all over pakistan and will it take decades to completely root i out.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

people need to understand tht all the jehadis r not fighting against our army or they r involved in such activities..no doubt bait ullah is a terrorist and this article is 100% true..this guy is running a gang..not a jehadi organisation..when people come up with the unclear term "jehadi",then they r referring it to massive number of people..
i believe tht rangers and police should carry search operations in pashtoon areas in khi..although it is harsh but it is the need of time

you are right. This article does point to the presense of wealthy and powerful Taliban supporters in Karachi. These tribals provide money and resources to the Talibans.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

oh my dear ajju, ttp does not enjoy any kind of funding from jehadi supporters as it used to be for laskhar tayyaba or afghan mujahiddins or bosnian people..these groups received support only from pashtoon but also from punjabies urdu speaking people..
ttp is widely hated in religious sections of deobandis especially tableeghi jamaat is against ttp..
ttp is doing kidnapping, bank robbery etc to finance their needs..and yeah jehadis dont need to do tht..i personally had witnessed fundings for laskhar tayyaba or chechan fighters in gurumander area of khi..and i know very well how these jehadis think or operate or how many of these organisations r "original" or "trap"..
there is a common view tht all pashtoons r supporting bait ullah mehsud which is horribly horribly wrong..majority of pashtoons give galis to fazal ullah bait ullah beac they think tht these idiots have destroyed their peaceful life..

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

Pakistani media is doing a great job Wah !

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

TTP and Jihadis the two sides of the same coin. This little fact is still hard for the pakistani public to understand due to years of brainwashing by the state apparatus.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

oh yeah..u know all the ****..when mujahiddins started to robbed bank or kidnapped people for some freaking money?..u secular extremists r the biggest problem for pak ...beac of same minded people in our govt and army,we cannot make independent problem solving policy to tackle terrorism
yes there r some extremists who r now with ttp and they have their own reasons..the best tackle is dialogue and power mixture..if all jehadis or bearded people were against our country then situation would have been diff....
pakistan army needs to make distinction between enemy and friends and they have to close afghan border completely by wht ever way or means as indians, russians, iranians will destroy our country....
mr khehkeshan, can u please tell me y americans still blame isi or army for supporting afghani taliban;)... do u know y drones attack on mullah nazir area and y they dont attack on bit ullah mehsud area?..y americans neva attacked bait ullah even they had confirmed evidence of his presence in a particular area..y they attacked haqqani who is a pro pakistan..?..my dear,u need a brain to understand these things..........This little fact is still hard for the pakistani public to understand due to years of brainwashing by the state apparatus.;)

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

The so called "independent" policy to deal with extremists according to the right wing contingent is simply negotiate and surrender. Anything else to them is a foreign backed policy.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

y dont u come up with some arguement or stop bashing around?...u dont have anything to say..u dont know the jehadis even in ur city khi..u dont know the pashtoon area..u dont know sensitive issues...use of power along with dialogue with locals is the best way to tackle..to hell with right or left or middle wing...if pak follows ur naive and amateur opinions, then our army will keep on fighting for 20 years...i dont support any party...i just support pakistan..may be love for pak is not in ur blood..but it is definitely in mine...

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

I know the jihadi mindset all too well. Power and dialogue only works with people who have a stake in this land or world. It only works with people who believe in just actions in both this dunya and deen.

It does not work with the nihilistic death cult of jihadis and their taliban. These followers of the egyptian terrorist qutb believe that all muslim states are in the state of jahliyat and thus muslim lands are considered darl-ul-harb where all forms of brutality and animalistic violence can be used to achieve their goal for "true" shariah. To achieve thsi goal, the practice of taqqiya can be used to make fake peace deals to deceive the murtads and to gain strength. This is why the taliban went against all muslim, human and even pashtun norms by inviting a jirga of elders in Matta, Swat to a masjid and then killed all the members of the jirga and cut their bodies up as a symbol of his manhood and to instill terror on local people. This method would never be used by pashtun tribal, but was acceptable to the followers of the shaitan qutb and his jihadi ideaology which states all means are acceptable in establishing the jihadi extremist version of islam on the populace.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

Tales of woe and a glimmer of hope

You are right about him, except what you said holds true for pretty much all MQM supporters. Now I have seen many bank robbery and ATM money grabbing videos in Karachi, and in all events, the guys look more like MQM commandos than a Taliban warrior. Clean Shaven, speaking clean urdu, wearing starched kurta chooridaar pajamas, those arent Taliban :rotfl: They also bear striking resemblences to Farooq Sattar.

Are you saying that you have seen videos of all the dacoities in Karachi? I mean come on dude.

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

Spock is a video analyst for PTI it seems :hehe:

There are plenty of them on youtube, just punch in MQM robbery bank… Voila. Here is one.

All posted by PTI/Nawaz/JI internet supporters labeling any video of a robbery as connected to MQM, when in fact those of us in and from karachi know very well which group is most involved in such crimes. But please, keep going with this “youtube proof”.

Plenty is still not all :)… also read the highlighted part

Re: Taliban, Karachi and Banks

The guy doing the robbery looks sindhi (not that it matters).

The guy who is being robbed look like sindhi, balochi, punjabi or pukhtoon, wearing sindhi/multani/baluchi or pukhtoon topi. MQM rob I mean rule. Jeaay Iltaaf Bhai.:)
