The Taliban are not an enemy of the U.S. and should not be talked about in such terms, Joe Biden has claimed.
The vice-president said the militant Islamist group only represents an inherent threat if it allows Al-Qaeda to strike at the U.S.
In an interview with Newsweek, Mr Biden warned against labelling the Taliban as an enemy.

Biden's statement should not surprise anyone it is like US foreign policy in utter chaos and full of contradictions.
they are so humiliated after 10+ years of getting nowhere they now almost on their knees begging the afghans to stop attacking them.

Americans want to to wrap this afghan mission so these are all diplomatic words. The sudden shift of US remarks on Taliban shows that Americans are ready to talk to Taliban.

Sorry, but this is the missing step which started the decade long war.
I think if they had to talk with taliban as friend they can done that ten years ago.
It is now in thier strategic intrest to stop this war and save their skin.

No, they are trying to wrap their losses in good shining 'friendship' paper. If they REALLY want to end the decade-long war, they should apologize to Taliban, apologize to people of Afghanistan, pull their military out, fund UN to develop Afghanistan etc.

why would the US need to do any such thing? the US can leave whenever it wants to. afghanistan will continue to be a stone-age wasteland like it has always been, and the US will continue to be a first-world superpower. what does the US need from the taliban?
the reality is that the standard of victory for a superpower is astronomically high. not only does US need to dismantle al-qaeda in the country and destroy its leadership including OBL, but in addition it needs to convert this wasteland into a functioning democracy with a stable government and a peaceful society. taliban cooperation is only needed to achieve this lofty and ridiculous goal. in an economically-defunct country infested with warlordism and ethnic warfare, such lofty goals were always unachievable and ludicrous.
but this is the victory standard the US holds itself to. for you to also hold the US to this victory standard and use words like "losses" only reveals how plainly you acknowledge and respect the US's superpower status.
