Off course faith is hidden in the hearts of people and only Allah knows the type and existence of that faith.
People can only see the actions. Taliban are mutilating bodies, bombing schools, and killing non-combatant Pakistanis, conducting suicide bombings, destroying public & private properties, and committing anti-state crimes. These actions of Taliban must be looked at from different perspective.
Do these actions prove them to be:
Strictly Muslim actions
Or
Their actions prove them to be worse then Kafirs and Juhala.
Ask the innocents whose necks are being chopped by primitive tribals aka Kuffars. Was there any middle ground once the head got lobbed off from the rest of the body?
when the Taliban first ascended to power in Afghanistan we considered them hero's and gave them such a good wholesome image even though plenty of muslims of hazara, tajik, uzbek origin had claimed to be persecuted. we ddi not consider them proper muslims and we ignored them. the taliban got a lot of positive spin from the once unquestionnable powerful madrassas and deobandi centres.
at times i and some of us think that there must be good taliban and bad taliban now. the good taliban would not commit those acts of murder which they are committing now. the good taliban were approved by our religious leaders, army officials and civilian government. then they spread into pakistan and now some talk of good taliban and bad taliban. the good taliban are the true taliban they say whotook over afghanistan and ruled it fairly. we never really trusted the hazara, uzbek or tajik or even socialist voices or any other which spoke out against the taliban back then. we were told and accpeted that the taliban spread by peace of course until they reached the non-pashtun areas of afghanistan, whose people were anti-islam and deserved to be punished. the media dismissed those who spoke against taliban and other than pakhtun nationalists from nwfp not many spoke against the taliban, even they were drowned out.
this is why it has become such a hard war because for a long time we told them this was islam. this is why some accept them so easily. theyhave been brainwashed not just by mullahs but by the media, army generals, politicians.... now they are in our backyard and being a thorn in the side.
in reality there were no good or bad taliban. they are using the same tehcniques as they used in non-pashtun areas of afghanistan - killing rivals, subjugating women, draconian laws, wanton murder, destruction. sad thing is so many people have made excuses for them - "they are not the true taliban".
mazar-i-shairf, kabul, bamiyan are all far enough from pakistan but what has happened there is now happening here. the truth is they were nothing more than barbarians then as they are now - the only difference is now blood is spilt on our own doorstep and its our very own.

^ One of the reasons for (Afghani) Taliban's approval ratings in Pakistan was lack of media coverage. Now that they are in Pakistan and media has more access to people affected by them, areas they hit, their atrocities it has become clear as to what they are. Pakistan's TTP have put Afghani Taliban to shame.
