Mulla Umar was a teacher at a school near Kadhar. At that time different areas were controlled by different groups in Afghanistan. At that time a person was trying to take his wife (pregnant) to a hospital. As he entered from one area to another (controlled by Ahmed Shah Maood) the gaurds at the check point asked him for money. He gave all the money and they asked for more. When he said that he does not have any more they kept the woman and told the man to go and get money from nearby village. They said that if he does not bring money they will see howhis wife gives birth to a baby. The man, worried went to a nearby village and went to the school where mullah Umar and some other teachers were teaching. On listening to his story they thought that this is too much and they have to do something about it. So they took their guns and killed the border guards. When they came back to Kndhar they were really liked by all the villagers and this started the Taliban movement. It is the most popular movement in Afghanistan.
My uncle went there and said that the place is very peaceful He said that they left all their bags outside the hotel loaded on their car and no one stole anything from it.

Superficially, the Taliban present themselves as true Muslim citizens by banning smoking, gambling and drinking. In reality, the Taliban are nothing more than hypocrites. Not only do they grow opium to finance their war, but they collect a large tax from civilian farmers who grow them for other reasons.

Production of opium in Afghanistan reached 400 tonnes last year. Helmand and Nangarhar are major opium production areas of Afghanistan, and they are in full control of the Taliban. The opium produced in Afghanistan is refined into heroin in laboratories located in Pakistan. In fact, all the areas in Afghanistan that grow opium are controlled by the Taliban who were created by the Interior Minister of Pakistan for several reasons, including to open a trade route for Pakistan to Central Asia.

Many of the Taliban are involved in this criminal trade. They include Haji Abdur Rahman Bakwalii from Nimroz, Mestiri Amrullah Helmandi, alias Mestiri Talib, Mullah Abdur Rahim Helmandi, Haji Bismillah Helmandi and Lal Mohammad, who serves as the Taliban commander in Nimroz province.

Mullah Yarana, a main Taliban official, lives in the Pakistani border town of Chaman and is involved in processing and smuggling heroin to the United States and Europe through Iran and Turkmenistan. Mullah Yarana's headquarters is basically a den of drug smugglers.

When confronted with this issue, the Taliban claim that only the use of opium is unlawful in Islam and that the selling of it is valid. The truth is that Islam forbids both the use, and selling of opium as well as other harmful drugs!

The ousted government led by President Rabbani prohibited the production, trade, and smuggling of opium and other drugs.

Many western new sources have reported this hypocrisy of the Taliban, including the London Telegraph, and Reuters.

As far as opium is concerned it has been proved my your western media that Taliban have banned it and their is no more opium production in Afghanistan any more. Your news is very old. But since it was a news that could make good impression of Taliban it was not given any prefrences in western media.

World: Taliban virtually wipes out Afghanistan’s opium crop

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (February 15, 2001 8:19 p.m. EST http://www.nandotimes.com)) - U.N. drug control officers said the Taliban religious militia has nearly wiped out opium production in Afghanistan – once the world’s largest producer – since banning poppy cultivation last summer.

A 12-member team from the U.N. Drug Control Program spent two weeks searching most of the nation’s largest opium-producing areas and found so few poppies that they do not expect any opium to come out of Afghanistan this year.

“We are not just guessing. We have seen the proof in the fields,” said Bernard Frahi, regional director for the U.N. program in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He laid out photographs of vast tracts of land cultivated with wheat alongside pictures of the same fields taken a year earlier – a sea of blood-red poppies.

A State Department official said Thursday all the information the United States has received so far indicates the poppy crop had decreased, but he did not believe it was eliminated.

Last year, Afghanistan produced nearly 4,000 tons of opium, about 75 percent of the world’s supply, U.N. officials said. Opium – the milky substance drained from the poppy plant – is converted into heroin and sold in Europe and North America. The 1999 output was a world record for opium production, the United Nations said – more than all other countries combined, including the “Golden Triangle,” where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.

Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban’s supreme leader, banned poppy growing before the November planting season and augmented it with a religious edict making it contrary to the tenets of Islam.

The Taliban, which has imposed a strict brand of Islam in the 95 percent of Afghanistan it controls, has set fire to heroin laboratories and jailed farmers until they agreed to destroy their poppy crops.

The U.N. surveyors, who completed their search this week, crisscrossed Helmand, Kandahar, Urzgan and Nangarhar provinces and parts of two others – areas responsible for 86 percent of the opium produced in Afghanistan last year, Frahi said in an interview Wednesday. They covered 80 percent of the land in those provinces that last year had been awash in poppies.

This year they found poppies growing on barely an acre here and there, Frahi said. The rest – about 175,000 acres – was clean.

“We have to look at the situation with careful optimism,” said Sandro Tucci of the U.N. Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention in Vienna, Austria.

He said indications are that no poppies were planted this season and that, as a result, there hasn’t been any production of opium – but that officials would keep checking.

The State Department counternarcotics official said the department would make its own estimate of the poppy crop. Information received so far suggests there will be a decrease, but how much is not yet clear, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“We do not think by any stretch of the imagination that poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has been eliminated. But we, like the rest of the world, welcome positive news.”

The Drug Enforcement Administration declined to comment.

No U.S. government official can enter Afghanistan because of security concerns stemming from the presence of suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Poppies are harvested in March and April, which is why the survey was done now. Tucci said it would have been impossible for the poppies to have been harvested already.

The areas searched by the U.N. surveyors are the most fertile lands under Taliban control. Other areas, though they are somewhat fertile, have not traditionally been poppy growing areas and farmers are struggling to raise any crops at all because of severe drought. The rest of the land held by the Taliban is mountainous or desert, where poppies could not grow.

Karim Rahimi, the U.N. drug control liaison in Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province, said farmers were growing wheat or onions in fields where they once grew poppies.

“It is amazing, really, when you see the fields that last year were filled with poppies and this year there is wheat,” he said.

The Taliban enforced the ban by threatening to arrest village elders and mullahs who allowed poppies to be grown. Taliban soldiers patrolled in trucks armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers. About 1,000 people in Nangarhar who tried to defy the ban were arrested and jailed until they agreed to destroy their crops.

Signs throughout Nangarhar warn against drug production and use, some calling it an “illicit phenomenon.” Another reads: “Be drug free, be happy.”

Last year, poppies grew on 12,600 acres of land in Nangarhar province. According to the U.N. survey, poppies were planted on only 17 acres there this season and all were destroyed by the Taliban.

“The Taliban have done their work very seriously,” Frahi said.

But the ban has badly hurt farmers in one of the world’s poorest countries, shattered by two decades of war and devastated by drought.

Ahmed Rehman, who shares less than three acres in Nangarhar with his three brothers, said the opium he produced last year on part of the land brought him $1,100.

This year, he says, he will be lucky to get $300 for the onions and cattle feed he planted on the entire parcel.

“Life is very bad for me this year,” he said. “Last year I was able to buy meat and wheat and now this year there is nothing.”

But Rehman said he never considered defying the ban.

“The Taliban were patrolling all the time. Of course I was afraid. I did not want to go to jail and lose my freedom and my dignity,” he said, gesturing with dirt-caked hands.

Shams-ul-Haq Sayed, an officer of the Taliban drug control office in Jalalabad, said farmers need international aid.

“This year was the most important for us because growing poppies was part of their culture, and the first years are always the most difficult,” he said.

Tucci said discussions are under way on how to help the farmers.

Western diplomats in Pakistan have suggested the Taliban is simply trying to drive up the price of opium they have stockpiled. The State Department official also said Afghanistan could do more by destroying drug stockpiles and heroin labs and arresting producers and traffickers.

Frahi dismissed that as “nonsense” and said it is drug traffickers and shopkeepers who have stockpiles. Two pounds of opium worth $35 last year are now worth as much as $360, he said.

Mullah Amir Mohammed Haqqani, the Taliban’s top drug official in Nangarhar, said the ban would remain regardless of whether the Taliban received aid or international recognition.

“It is our decree that there will be no poppy cultivation. It is banned forever in this country,” he said. “Whether we get assistance or not, poppy growing will never be allowed again in our country.”

As wonderful as this story might sound, the evidence points in the opposite direction.

These idiots themselves with CNN, BBC and all other major western news services confirmed that story.

Remember the United States was the original support of Taliban, and if it was a lie then why did the west support that lie? And if they lied then by supporting that lie, why should you trust them now?

The Taliban were trained by the Frontier Constabulary, a para-military force of the Interior Ministry of Pakistan. At that time it was headed by Gen. Nasrullah Babar. The ISI, were not involved in the earlier stages of Taliban development, but they definetly had a hand in the later stages. After Pakistan properly prepared the Taliban, they spread the news that the Taliban is a group fighting the corruption amongst the Mujahideen, on grounds of Islamic convictions and the need to establish peace in that country.

That’s not even close to the truth. It’s a long story. All I have to say is Pakistan helped when it realized it’s either help them or loose part of Pakistan. That is a very deep and a long political monopoly which I don’t have time for explaining.

Today, the Taliban leaders claim that the government led by President Rabbani was illegitimate and unislamic. They even branded the famous Mujahideen Commander Ahmad Shah Masood a criminal.

Ahmad Shah Masood is a true fighter, but he is not a good mujahid. Why is he shaking hands with the Russians, when it was them who invade and started all this misery in his country? Did he forget what they did to his Brothers and Sisters?

Wherever the Taliban conquered, destruction and oppression has followed. So far, they have destroyed historic artwork in Herat, burned villages, committed atrocites against the Shias of Afghanistan

Ask them for what they did to the people of ethnic Pashtuns? Ask them why did the burn 90% of their Pashto history from Musems, libraries, schools, etc? Ask them why did they shot their men in the head front of their families? Look at the U.N violation report and you will see who started all this burning and shooting people in the head and all that other that they have mentioned. They as puppets of Iran try to do the same as the Americans did to the Native Americans (Indians), Ethnic Cleansing! In the name of peace!

A man by the name Shahi K. Sadat who went through all that wrote a book and he is now a well-known poet among many Afghans. Here is a little piece from his book called “Tears of the Heart” (the book contains poems, in Urdu, Farsi, German, English, and Hindi) :

Schools are open, but segregated schools and they are working on opening more. Women are working. Opium was grown by the people of Afghan, not the Taliban. They have since convinced the Afghan people that they shouldn’t and have destroyed it a year ago. Confirmed my western media just two weeks ago. Look up a thread in World Affairs “World Opium source destroyed”.

Pakistan created the Taliban, for the purpose of having indirect control over the policies made in Afghanistan.

The world created Taliban! Everyone is responsible for Taliban, U.S, Russia, British, Iran, Turkey, India, Pakistan, and all Arab nations.

If Pakistan successfully installs a puppet regime in Afghanistan, they will benefit economically, the Durand treaty will be extended, and Afghanistan will continue to live occupied and in the dark ages.

No, Pakistan is helping because it is very happy to know that nationalist of Pashoonistan and Pakhtunkhawa in NWFP (Afghania) have calmed down because now they have an entire country to look up to in stead of a small province.

History teaches us that foreigners do not have much luck in conquering the Afghan people. The British failed in the late 1800s and early 1900s and the Soviets failed recently. In fact, one of the factors that brought an end to the Soviet Empire was the defeat of the Red Army in Afghansitan. History tends to repeat itself: most likely, Pakistan will face the same doom.

Now this is funny, because I guess this guy forgot who made that history. Was it Uzbeks? Tajiks? Irainians? I don’t think so. The credit as a whole belongs to the Pashtuns, the native Afghans (as in majority Taliban).

I wrote this a short while back on another forum:

Taliban are the only alternative for Pakistan.

Those who are against Taliban show a complete lack of understanding of the Afghanistan situation and Pakistan’s role in it during the Soviet occupation. Let me give you a brief backgrounder. First of all during the Jihad against the Soviets, it was imperative for the ISI to support the more fundamentally inclined Mujahideen group as opposed to the ones that were more nationalist. That’s why Hekmatyar and other like-mined groups got the lion’s share of arms and funds (70%) over Massod and others. There were two very good reasons why the ISI did that:

1) This ensured that Islam took precedence in the Mujahideen as a uniting factor and Pukhtoon nationalist groups were to remain fragmented. Their was an increasing danger that the refugees along with the Mujahideen would turn their attention towards creating a greater Afghanistan or Pukhtoonkhwa, with parts of NWFP incorporated in it. To limit Pukhtoon nationalism from turning violent, the ISI discriminated against the Pukhtoon nationalistic groups and rightly so. This was successful in finishing off most nationalist tendencies in the area.

2) The second and equally important reason was to keep the Mujahideen divided amongst themselves by showing precedence over one group to another, and to stop any one party from getting overly powerful. That is why after Ahmed Shah Masood’s successful campaign against the Soviets, Hekmatyar was suddenly elevated by the ISI to control Massod’s rising popularity. Massod obviously was and still is the most popular Mujahideen commander, and could have easily made the refugees and Mujahideen rebel against Pakistan. When Gen. Zia-ul-Haq was stationed as a military advisor in Jordan, he witnessed the PLO’s united front battling it out with Jordanian security forces, and he did not want the same to happen with Afghan refuges against Pakistani forces. It was a wise decision, to protect Pakistan’s integrity. But there are also other political and ideological factors why the Mujahideen did not unite.

Ahmed Shah Massod’s hatred of the ISI and Pakistanis started then and long before anyone knew what the “Taliban” were. So, please keep in mind that the NA hates Pakistan and what it feels was Pakistan’s unwanted interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs. While they have the right to feel angry at ISI’s role, let us remember that ISI did this to safeguard Pakistan’s interest. So, point being that anyone who supports the NA over the Taliban is NOT looking out for Pakistan’s interest. If God forbid, the anti-Pakistan Northern Alliance were to ever take power in Afghanistan, it would be almost like Pakistan being trapped between two “India’s”. A nightmare scenario any way you look at it.

This is why I find it disappointing that any patriotic Pakistan would support Iran’s motives in Afghanistan over Pakistan’s. The Taliban are less then perfect, but they are the best alternative for Pakistan. That’s a fact that cannot be denied. It is true that the Taliban have not been kind to the Shia minorities and local commanders in their zeal may have in fact committed massacres. And this will sound cold, but that is not enough reason for us to risk our national security and decades of hard work we have invested in Afghanistan, only to have the negative impacts of an influx of refugees to show for it. And trust me, our national security will be greatly impacted if we were to stop supporting the Taliban anytime soon.

Their backbone is rich and educated folk of NWFP and other Pakistani Muslim groups. You should check out the recent visit of the Taliban ambassador (24 yearold “Jahil man” ) to the US. Not only did he take the entire country by a surprise; but he also stunted the entire American media of how much he knew about US affairs and history. He was thought in Afghanistan “Jahil” Madrassa
