I have been lucky in that I have not needed to take out a loan for school. I applied once but I was told I was not eligible as I was not working at that time. Luckily my father was paying my fees. I am aiming to pay for everything myself now. My problem is that because of a number of important particulars and factors, I have had difficulty finding a job and don’t have time for one, I simply don’t. It is not laziness, it is rather my weird situation, I am “working” and have my hands in too many pies that I cannot “afford” to take them out of. So in that case, I again might not be eligible for a provincial school loan. What are my other options for financial assistance aside from scholarships and bursaries? I need money and I need a lot of it by the fall, latest. I will also not be able to pay it back for a long time because I will be taking out massive loans for further education.
Re: Taking out loans in Canada
Should I become an automaton and dice up my day. There is school in the summer, which will take up 30 hours per week. There is "work" which will take up 10 hours per week. There is more work that will take up a further I-don't-know-what, let's say another 10. There is GRE, which will take up about 14 hours per week or less. There is some exracurricular involvement that I absolutely MUST muddy my hands in, which will take up, let's say 5 hours per week. There is school-related X which will take up a very conservative estimate of 5 hours per week.
In total, per week, I am absolutely, justifiably busy for at least: 74 hours per week. This figure is much inflated in the fall. Now I don't have time for a paid job. What do I do to pay for school, food, and an apartment?
Re: Taking out loans in Canada
Sarah, if you know you won't be working or won't have time for a paid job, then I'm sure you'll be eligible for government's student loan.
Re: Taking out loans in Canada
I won't be able to pay back my loans for eons to come most likely. I want to hear from others in my situation and how they managed. I am worried about interest. And I am not sure if my school loans will pay for my apartment.

Teaching Assistantship?!?!
I am a TA and I pay only the graduate fees that is about $600 and everything else is covered through the assistantship contract including my health insurance. I also get a bi-weekly stipend which easily pays off for my rent of the apartment and for some extra money I work part time on the weekends.. basically, it works out pretty well.
Re: Taking out loans in Canada
umm wait a minute.. I just realized that you have asked for this in Canada and I am in the US hence I dun know much about the rules in Canada. oh well, I am pretty sure you can apply for teaching assistantship positions in Canada. :-)
Re: Taking out loans in Canada
I'm just an undergrad at the moment GTG, so no teaching assistantships possible.
Re: Taking out loans in Canada
Sarah I know quite a few undergrad TA's and they have almost the same opportunities.. well, it could be different out there! Good luck.
