tailors and embroiderers

OK, can someone with more experience in having clothes stitched and clothes made in general advise me what are the things to ask the tailor to do.
What I mean is , when I was there last, there was a woman just before me and she took about 20 minutes to instruct the tailor the do’s and don’t of the suit itself. It was just one suit and she took along time to go over the details. I on the other hand, just hand over my piles of clothes and “hope for the best”.

What are the main points to get across to him so as to avoid disappointment. Of course I will tell him how i want it stitched but there must be finer details I am missing.

Also the same advise when having clothes embroidered pls.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

does not matter how much u explain to tailor, still can end as disaster. last time i gave tailor 5 suits along with dupattas to put patch /patti on them and he ended up making one shirt out of dupatta for the suit which was most expensive. and then they never admit. i would say whatever instruction u give to tailor make sure he writes it right there.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

Well it depends how fussed you are to be honest.

It generally goes like this but there will be more instruction for formal wear.

If there is fabric for more than one person, deal with one person at a time. Make sure the tailor takes a note of what fabrics are for that person, what is kameez fabric, what is for trousers/shalwar and what is duputta fabric. Go through all the measurements, making sure it's all noted down, especially things like necklines (so depths aren't messed up).
Then you need to explain designing for each outfit - what sort of kameez you want, neckline design, sleeves length/style, if and where you want piping or pattis (hopefully you will use a tailor where they will get regular plain piping/patti's themselves), kind of zipper you want, where you want darts, kind of waistband you want on trousers/shalwars (flat front, elasticated back or flat all around with hooks). How you want the duputta finished. If you want something the same as a photo, sometimes just handing it over is not enough, you have to go through the components of the outfit to make sure the tailor has noted the things you want copied.

Oh, and for embroidery it really depends on the place where you're having it done. If I'm having my stuff done from my regular guy, I get him to show me the trace (firstly the design is drawn out on tracing paper) to make sure it's okay. This part is easy to get messed up. For example, if work is being done around the neckline and they've embroidered it too big, there is nothing you can do. The guy making the 'chapa' can easily screw this up.
My friend would always first have her tailor mark the fabric where he was going to do the cutting before it went for any embroidery. So for example, work around the armpit would be in the right shape and up to where the seam should be. If it's being embroidered/tailored by the same people, it should be less of an issue.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

They mess up anyway, even though they draw a whole sketch right in front of you, but at the end they make what they feel like making or get the time to make. Then why waste time???

However, i have to admit, some women take cloths way too seriously, i saw a lady crying at tailor in front of a dozen people for him not making the suit according to her instructions. That was too much though.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

I wana know the cheap and good tailor in lahore and also an embroider who makes replicas or any embroidry at loww cost around 3000rps per suit. i would like to get some for my weddding heavy outfits.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

Thanks for the tips, I know things can and do go wrong as they have with me in the past too but one can only try.
I have noticed though that women there give very detailed instructions of each and everything. I should watch more carefully and learn!!!

Re: tailors and embroiderers

I think that if a tailor charges a hefty sum, he/she will follow your instructions diligently. My tailor calls at any time of the day/night to make sure of any specifications, in case he is unsure. Of course he charges a pretty penny. We pay because we know that any other tailor who is THAT good will not take new customers so if you leave, where do you go?
Essentially, in most cases, you get what you pay for.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

^ How much does your tailor charge??

I used to go to a tailor in Y block, he charges 600+ for a plain trouser shirt, and more for anything laces or a little design added. excelent stitching though.

A friend introduced her tailor saying he is very cheap and good, i gave her 8 suits and asked her to have one or two stitched and show me before working on others.

Result? he charged me over 600 per suit, :smack: no laces nothing added, all super tight, no zip at back! used more then half of duppata fapric, left a few inch duppata for me :frowning: and trouser fabric on upper half, and roughly a yard or half of shirt fabric, rest disappeared, poor stitching and finishing, a complete mess, of ALL 8 SUITS :naak:

Now i have some very nice lawn suits and i am looking for a nice tailor, not very expensive and must be honest in fabric use :frowning:

Re: tailors and embroiderers

Wow, I didn't realize what an issue getting clothes stitched was. Can any of you guys recommend a good tailor in karachi? I'm flying out there in May and I won't have ANY time for mess ups! Please let me know if you guys know anyone good and professional.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

my tailors in lahore , and he's very cheap compared to others yet he's so gopod. he's a man of his word, and ive neevr been disappointed with anything touch wood! everyone in my family use him, most of my freinds here. he's based in iqbal town. he charges 450 for a trouser suit and for a lining one its 600, frocks are like 1000, he's very reasonable and again will call u up to check if unsure of anything, a d he is one of the very few tailors i would say knows how to put life into a lifeless peice of cloth!

Re: tailors and embroiderers

:( Iqbal town is quite far from me, i live in defene, at the last corner of defence :(

Any good cheap tailors in defence?

Re: tailors and embroiderers

holymoly I had my clothes stiched by an aunty in Misri Shah but I think that's tooo far from you :(

When i was in Pakistan I had my regular, cheap cotton kapray stitched by this lady in the neighborhood...200 or 300 per suit....another neighborhood lady, whose work was much better IMO, charged 400 per suit. And then I had some stitched by prototype and a few more by these darzis in Auriga who charged 800-1000 (with and without lining). Now i had given them some kaam to do on hte fabric which they did fabulously....but the stitching was just eh. Not awful but it wasn't anything special.
Not sure who I'll go to next time.....

Re: tailors and embroiderers

^A lot of these kaam places use eh darzis. Normally, it's preferable to get the kaam done where they do it good, and then take the fabric to the tailor of your choice for the actual stitching.

Re: tailors and embroiderers

^Yeah! I was so disappointed too…esp cz these guys were good iwth the kaam and they actually had everything ready on time! AND they actually called me when they had questions about something!

maybe just be more specific next time? Why is it so hard to find someone who does good work AND is professional??? :hinna:

Re: tailors and embroiderers

Don't handover more than 2 suitscuz than ur'll remeber ur instruction. My taylor always calls to take my instruction before stitching, or if faces any other problem. Though he charges a hefty amount but never fails me.
