Small hoop shaped nose rings
Bridal entrances choreographed to a CD of the latest bollywood hit song. Acutally, having a DJ in general is pretty tacky.
Other tacky things from desi weddings... Obviously pre-folded looking turbans for the groom (for some reason, this seems to be more of a problem with Indian turbans than Pakistani ones)
Almost every sherwani from India that I've ever seen - If its in a color other than cream/white, tan, black, grey, or navy; or if it has enough embroidery on it for it to be a formal ladies shalvar suit, it's tacky.
Ripping the groom's shoes off. Especially if he's wearing a suit with lace-up shoes.
Napkins folded into a fan shape and stuffed inside the water glasses
Rose petals. Anywhere.
Toasts with water, soda or other non-alcoholic beverages.
Pitchers of soda placed on the tables.
"Flower arrangements" consisting of a single rose and some baby's breath in a cheap looking vase.
Guests who put napkins on their heads when the Nikkah is being read.
"Theme" weddings. Peacock, "Mughal," "Umrao Jaan"...its all tacky.
I could go on...
I think you have indian issues, wake up and realize at one time we were all one country GASP i mean to hate on sherwanis? i think indian sherwanis are way cuter than the ones i've seen paki guys wear.
toasts with non alcoholic beverages is a way to blend a western tradition without ******ng things up, wishing family well and wanting a room to drink to their health wealth and happiness is sincere and far from tacky. I hope someday people do that for you.
agreed on the crap centerpieces if that's the case then just don't bother. Agreed on sodas on each table but i don't mind having a pitcher of water on each table. folding the napkins into the glass is a classy thing, and that even works when you are going out for fine dining. Maybe you should get out more.
theme weddings work a lot better than mismatched weddings iwth no theme going on. also i love how the color scheme goes with the theme, that goes with the gifts guests are given for attending.. i loved themed mendhis as well went to a really nice casablanca, 1001 arabian nights, japanese themed events.
rose petals are beautiful and much better than having rice stuck in your hair. I love it when the bride has rose petals thrown on her as she walks in, it makes people feel royal and i dont mind when ppl shower those on me.
the whole shoes thing is really taken from hindu ceremonies where the groom and bride cannot enter the mandap without their shoes on. infact a ton of rasams are from that but i think it's a fun game to play. I just never understood how people manage to do it when guys wear shoelaces nowdays.
nose ring wise i think the really small ones are cute (amisha patel in humraaz for instance) anyhow sometimes when you wear a big gold hoop with just a red jewel strung on the hoop looks dumb in pictures. you see because from far away the gold against your normal skintone being so thin doesn't sow, so any hanging pear or strung red bead just shows up as a dot to the side of your mouth or worse on your lip. My friend did that i could take the time to crop her pic but point is that's not cute. so no to big hoops yay to small ones.
