This is an excellent study of the lives of the men and women who live and work in the Shahi Mohalla. Dr. Fauzia studied them for a long time and got to know them well. She explores the lives of the tawaifs/kanjars/mirasis in this part of Lahore and the hypocrisy of pakistani society…
it is a really excellently written book and clears a lot of myths…
yeah i have read the book..
Fauzia has ventured into the forbidden zone of the red light area to stress the need to understand the paradox and stigmas attached to this age old myth...
we see how taboos keep these women out of mainstream society, even while they are kept from changing their profession, by these very taboos...
eventhough Dr. Fauzia has the tendancy to repeat herself at times, she still has done a great job something which i dont expect anyone has the heart to do even in this day and age .. whereas her first visit was in 1990 or something of the sort.
Re: Taboo by Dr. Fauzia Saeed…Has anyone else read this book?
I’ve read the book, but the way Shorish Kashmiri dealt with the subject in his book ’ Iss bazar main’, the writer of this book couldn’t express in such way.
