ISLAMABAD: In an unprecedented move, top leaders of the Tableeghi Jamaat have denounced enforcement of Sharia at gunpoint, religious extremism, militancy and terrorism.
Leaders of the Jamaat, who scrupulously avoid speaking on controversial issues, also called for promoting inter-faith harmony, tolerance, human rights, social justice and peace.
They were speaking at the conclusion of a three-day congregation near here on Monday. ‘Shariah cannot be enforced at gunpoint,’ declared Haji Abdul Wahab, Amir of the Tableeghi Jamaat, Pakistan.
Had that been the case, Allah Almighty would have sent fierce angels to protect prophets and enforce their faiths, he said.
The 90-year-old scholar, who left his job as sessions judge in pre-partition India and joined the Jamaat, cited the example of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), said the Holy Prophet never used force. Instead he spread the word of God only by peaceful means.
Haji Abdul Wahab also condemned extremism and militancy in the name of Islam, apparently a reference to the growing trend of Talibanisation and enforcement of Shria in Swat and other areas in the NWFP.
Though a little late, but never too late. I hope other scholars, religious organizations speak against this crime.
This is not enough. Are you serious about this guys loopy logic. Fierce angles from heaven, and he still wants shariah, ony wants to start the violence after it is enforced.
i)Shariah is already enforced in Pakistan Law.
ii)We need less shariah and not more.
iii)Anybody who reason the way this person does should be sent to the loony bin.
iv)There was no violence in Islam ?
^ There's no need to attack Islam and call some one names just because you don't agree with him. You don't have to agree with him but there are millions of Muslim who regard Maulana Abdul Wahab sahab as respected scholar. So please refrain from calling anyone names.

I'm trying to make sense out of this... what are you trying to say here? Are you suggesting that he gives up desire for Shariah? or give up Islam?
i)Shariah is already enforced in Pakistan Law.
Like how? By stating in constitution that Quran should be upheld ... ??
ii)We need less shariah and not more.
Everyone has his own desires.
iii)Anybody who reason the way this person does should be sent to the loony bin.
Using the same logic you'd know you'd end in the loony bin too.

Ehtsab, how do you do these line by line quotes ?? pretty nifty
Can you please show me, cuz I cant figure it out :)
I understand if in reverence to a religious icon of the ripe old age of 90 you would overlook some very weird logic in refuting the Taliban, but if the SOLE reason for not refuting the Taliban is that "Allah did not send fierce angels from heaven to protect the prophet", and no one else find this weird, maybe I should do a double flip and dive into the loony bin myself.
On the other hand maybe the reporting is not accurate and he did actually need a profound multi-part thesis that he read out and convinced everyone to dis-associate with the Tlbn.
Seriously... if he did say this.... no fierce angels == > thus dont support Taliban...
so the Taliban are fierce angels, that are not sent by Allah...

classic case of LOST in TRALNSLATION. :D read the staement again, specialy the part in red font. He simply is saying that Allah and Muhammad (PBUH) never intended Islam to be spread by forcing it onto enemies.

......... or friends and countrymen.
My initial argument holds, the validity of a fact is proven by the absence of another fact, thus the absent is the proof of the present....
anyhow, I guess this is a positive step. Puritanism is a lesser evil than militancy.
Very good news. This is precisely the kind of consensus that is needed by the nation and public, so the Army can effectively do what it is meant to.
Ulema have to take a proactive role and guide people because people listen to their spiritual leaders/local mullah/scholars more than the politicians. Public needs to be educated on all levels on what is right and what is wrong...
The unfortunate combination of four M’s namely: 1) Musharraf (representing Military), 2) MQM (mis-representing Indian Mahajirs), 3) Muslim League (representing the opportunists of Punjab) and 4) Mulla (represented by MMA) has been leading Pakistan to the brink of total catastrophe for the last eight years.
Firstly the result of four M’s rule is the dragging of Pakistan First and the people of Pakistan fast into the ravine of destruction by sticking to the reigns of power by any and every means ,in one form or another despite of being the most hated political entities in Pakistani history.
Secondly Pakistan once a poor but peaceful country is becoming the most unfavorable country for the poor masses of Pakistan to dwell in and will continue to be until the four M’s are discouraged and rejected by the masses of Pakistan.
The first is M is gone, let's see what happens to the rest.

Ms are soon going to be replace by Taliban which is what you want. Hopefully, you will still have chance to long on to the internet...err internet is unIslamic.

Yes, indeed. His hate ideology has spread across the globe & 100s of thousands of people are dead b/c of what he breached. Just because people believe in someone doesn't make it right. Hitler had millions of supporters and that did not made him saint...neither would Wahab. He was a cult leader & nothing more.
To those who opposed the passage of the Sharia Bill, this was the objective. Everybody knew taliban wont stop at the bill. Even people like Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman (like it or not, he has a lot of following) are now distancing themselves from Taliban.
Brilliant news, this is exactly what you need.
Ulemas can make a huge difference by coming out in public to criticise talibans.
I heard a few of them at Altaf's address and it's good to see more ulemas coming forward.
