I like listening to tabla. Its really soothing for the soul and takes the edge off. I am about to purchase some tabla CD’s to initiate a collection. Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with the artists who’re into tabla.
Would you folks pls. recommend some good CD’s. Also, which tabla players should I be looking out for?
Two of the most famous Pakistani artists are Ustad Shaukat Hussain and Tariq Khan (or Tari Khan - I have to check on the name). I have heard them both playing in Mehdi Hassan concert tapes, and they are just amazing.
Parvaiz Mehdi also started out his career as a Tabla Nawaz for Mehdi Hassan back in 70's when he was one of his 'shaagirds'.
There is a record titled master drummers of india and it has assorted greats. I have it in a vinyl format and used it in mixes and all, but i think it is also available in a cd format.
Okay ghalib jee, i could find only one, I don't know where in the world is the other one...
Its Maestros of India (Pt. Hariparsad Chaurasia, Ustad Allarakha, Pt. Shikumar Sharma, Dhruba Ghosh, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt)
Its really good.
The light you see at the end of the tunnel is always a train.
Ghalib Yara, I am also passionate about Tabla, and know a few basic tals as well. I am looking for an Ustad in my neck of woods. Ustad Kardar has studios in the city, but they charge like an arm and a leg (close to 100 bucks an hour) for instructions. I have found a guy in Queen and he will give me a good price but the problem is that he is kinda 50 mins drive from me.
I would say that you gota have some of Zakir Hussain in your collection to start with. His two albums among other, my favorite, are “Essence of Rhythm” and the other “Melody and Rhythm” with Sangeeta Shankar on Violin. Should be available at any decent music store. There is one more, I can’t recall the name, where he duets with his Dad Ustad Allarakha. However, I don’t care much about his experimental and fusion stuff. I like plain old Tals.
I brought back with me a set of Tablas from Lahore, my old set had gotten bad beyond repair after my boys tried playing it with shoes and sticks. A good one in Lahore costs about 4000 ruppees, should you be interested. I know a guy in Hira Mandi who makes Tablas, let me know if you need any info on buying it.
if you are looking for someone really good. Ustaad Shafa'at ali Khan lives in Philadelphia. He does sitar and tabla both and teaches at U of Penn.
He has his private academy in the burbs as well. Shafa'at is from the famous khan family that is linked to the development of sitar and tabla art for generations.
