The west has had a bizarre relationship with middle eastern dictators. Consider Gaddafi, before they helped to assassinate him…we was becoming a poster boy of reform in the region, then poof…
Assad was always mistrusted, but it’s also true that the US and Canada were exporting suspected terrorists to Syria for “enhanced” questioning (of Syrian nationals).
But by far and wide, the relationship was cold.
