You seem to be looking at it only through sectarian angle. Assad is not targeting Sunnis for their sect. He is just against everyone who opposes him. That is similar to other dictators like those in Bahrain, Saudi, Jordan, etc.

Call a spade a spade. This is a completely sectarian war. Support for one side or the other is overwhelmingly split along sectarian lines.
