SYNOnames

Salam Alaikum,

First of all, i’m not sure whether this even belongs here. I was originally thinking of posting in General. So please move it, or leave it accordingly.

Now…

Ok…what we have here is something interesting. Although it may seem silly, but it can be quite a learning experience.

I’ve always been intrigued by how some muslim names have an exact counterpart in other faiths…I remember a few. Please contribute.

Here goes:

Isa- Jesus

Musa- Moses

Dawood- David

Danial- Daniel

Younus- John/Jonah(maybe)

Yousuf- Joseph

Haroon- Aaron

Kaisar/Qaisar- Ceasar

Yaqoob- Jacob

Aadam- Adam

Nuh- Noah

Habeel- Abel

Cabeel- Cain

I know most of these are names of prophets (may Allah be pleased with them), but people are named after them as well. I’d never thought of it like that. John for example, is the same as Younus/Jonah.

Share some more if you know any…

Re: SYNOnames

Ayyuub - Job

Ibrahim - Abraham

Maryam - Maria

Re: SYNOnames

Yusha - Joshua

Re: SYNOnames

I thought it was

Maryam - Merry

Re: SYNOnames

Yes, but Maryam-Mary-Maria-Marie(ke) are all the same name in different languages.

Mary is english, whereas Maria is I think greek, and Marie(ke) is dutch

Re: SYNOnames

I thought Maria was a spanish name.

Re: SYNOnames

some other names (not islamic, but persian):

Sikander - Alexander

Aflatoon - Plato

Re: SYNOnames

Spanish and other South-European languages, such as Italian and French have their routs in Roman-Greek languages. So, though Maria is widely used by Spanish people, it is originally a Greek translation of Maryam

btw: english is also a roman language, but less so than French, Spanish etc

Re: SYNOnames

Aflatoon is Persian? I thought it was a Greek name.

Re: SYNOnames

^ Plato is the original Greek name, Aflatoon is the Persian translation

Re: SYNOnames

^hmmm...never knew that. Does this mean Arastu is also a Persian name and Aristotle is the Greek version of it?

Re: SYNOnames

^ yeah, Arastu and Socraat are Persian translation of the original Greek names Aristotle and Socrates

Similarly, Homer is the English translation of Homerus which is the Latin translation of the original Greek name Homeros

Re: SYNOnames

talking about translations, there are numerous translations of Greek gods into Latin:

e.g.

Greek --> Latin

Zeus - Jupiter
Poseidon - Neptunus
Aphrodite - Venus
Athena - Minerva ;) (our very own mod)
Ares - Mars
Hermes - Mercurius
Hera - Juno
Hephaistos - Vulcanus

etc etc

Re: SYNOnames

Greek/Latin ---> Persian

Socrates: Sukraat
**
Arabic/Persian ---> Latin**

Ibn Sina: Avicenna
Ibn Rushd: Averroes
Al Farabi: Alpharabius
Abu Hamid al Ghazali: Algazel

Re: SYNOnames
