Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Fatigue
Cold intolerance
Forgetfulness
Hair loss
Changes in skin and nails
Muscle cramps
Depression

Could be anything…or thyroid issues. Don’t take these symptoms lightly. If you have a family member with a history, or any of these symptoms, go see your doctor and ask about TSH, a blood test that can detect thyroid disease.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

very right symptoms niksik u hv described...also mood swings n irritation in mood like get angry often, tiredness after little walk n desire to take rest very often ect.but i hv a question dat if someone has diagnosed thyroid disorder problem n hv started his thyroxine then for how long these symptoms would stay like hairloss is not temporary problem n wen there is reason behind it(thyroid disorder) then would it b difficult to handle dat??i heard dat symtoms remain for some year even when ur thyroid activity is balanced.dont know the fact..?

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

TKS Niksik.. I had a thyroid problem but it was balanced after medication.. I didn't know about the forgetfulness thingie, I actually am tending to forget a lot these days and it was worrying me.. Maybe i should get a fresh check up done.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Two major types of Thyroid problems can be detecting and symptoms for both are very close to each other.

** Hyperthyroidism primary and secondary ]**

  • Heat intolerance
  • weight loss with good appetite
  • hyperactivity
  • fine hair
  • palpitations
  • diarrhea
  • warm, moist skin ** Lab Test: TSH test

Primary Hyper:** TSH levels will be** low** with elevated T4 hormone

Secondary Hyper: TSH levels will be high with elevated T4

**
Hypothyroidism [primary and secondary]**

  • Cold intolerance
  • weight gain with decrease appetite [this weight gain is due to edema not fat or extra calories]
  • weakness
  • constipation
  • dry cool skin
  • myxedema

Lab Test: TSH levels

Primary Hypo: TSH high with low T4s
Secondary Hypo: TSH low with low T4s

Remember if detected Secondary Hyper/Hypo - It means your thyroid is working fine but you might have problems coming directly from Pituitary gland.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Hair loss can be b/c of both excess and loss of thyroid hormone OR also b/c of the toxicity of the drug you must be taking. Also, when the diet is poor [as in case of hypothyroidism] hair loss is expected as in not much of the nutrition will be available for hair growth b/c it will shut down its own nutrition supply to redirect energy somewhere else.

About for how long symptoms remains - it depends on individual to individual.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Thanks Lois.

Do you think we should all get checked out, or is there are certain age at which testing should be started?

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Niksik:

For Hyper i.e. Graves tend to occur mostly in women between the ages of 20-40 yrs. Women between these ages should get checked out if they believe they have symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

For Hypo i.e Hashimoto tend to occur commonly in women between the ages of 30-50.

so, yea if one desire and suspect probs with their thyroid after the age of 20 its better to talk to their physician and get their advice.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

I'm not sure about the sharp pains, Aaish, but yes, if you have these symptoms, make an appointment with your primary care physician.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

^u should get checked by an endocrinologist

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

I went to docters few days back, after i told her all my problems ,she recomended me tests for thyroid but alhumdulilah they all are fine,so i dont understand whats is the problem with me,it has been up to three months with all these problems.
Can pain in chest muscles can creat these type of problems too, like short breathing, weakness, and feeling tired after little exhustion?????

one way could be to have clearly enlarged thyroids. Much like having an adams apples only in a more "angel wing" like formation.

If i remember clearly, thyroid problems sometimes means that the person's B12 is low, so get that checked out too in your blood test.

Yes it does, it can cause cramps

Thyroid problems and B12 usually aren't directly related, though a B12 deficiency can cause some of the same symptoms...fatigue, shortness of breath, hair loss, palpitations, etc.

If the B12 deficiency is caused by an autoimmune problem (called pernicious anemia), then that could predispose you to developing other autoimmune problems, which can include hypo and hyperthyroidism.

Re: Symptoms of Thyroid Problems

what is that B12?????
