yes, in certain cultures/religions, like hinduism, white signifies death. in other cultures, black does the same. i believe pakistani brides in particular wear red because of indian culture, being that we were all part of india once. i think the tradition just carried over. muslim brides elsewhere usually wear white.
white can also signify positive aspects like purity and innocence, for example.
white is a relatively new canon color for western brides. late turn of the centuty, it wasn't uncommon to see brides wear green or some other color.
as for those eastern brides, it's an adoptive thing, from the western color. eastern asian brides also do not wear white, as they have their own traditional colors. some afghani and kashmiri cultures also call for green.
not all the symbolism for colors can be explained by the western perspective.
Why our 'traditional' asian brides wear red on their wedding day?
I mean the western brides wear white coz it's the symbol of 'virginity'.
So, what does red mean ????
Sorry but isnt it funny..... They wear white (symbol of virginity) even if they are not virgin..... Hope my comments doesnt bother anyone.... This was the first thing that came up in my mind after reading this..
Red color in East specially in indo/ Pakistani cultures is the symbol of being a ' Suhagan' (transformation of your single status to a married one)... So I guess thats why.... Also since i am preparing my dresses for my wedding. I was told to get a red one too, to wear it the next morning followed by the rukshati.... I have seen many girls wearing red color the morning after their rukhsati..... I think its considered a symbol that you are not virgin anymore and are married now.
So I guess this is what the red color is representation of...
i looooove red couloured bridal suits.
most of you may be right , its because of indian culture...(red sindoor, red bridal suit...).
anyways, wear whatever you like at your wedding, coz, today, it doesnt make any difference...
but RED still looks GREAT!
but, what diff does it make-- if you like it, thats the only why you need!
and i agree with sgc!
(btw, if i remember correctly the white in western weddings came in after queen victoria got married in white. it became a status symbol, and a fashion trend. also around the time of the world wars, it became a lot more common due to its practicality-- brides would usually dye the dress in a different hue later on and use the dress again)
^ yeah dats right white dresses became a popular choice after queen victoria wore one (mary tudor also wore a white dress) but before that brides wore alot of different colours (except black as it was seen as a symbol of death and red which was connected to prostitutes, lol at different cultural perspectives)
personally i love red! but its not a must and doesnt suit everyone...so wear what you like.
i remember when my aunts and mum got married white/cream/gold were the popular bridal choices.
Red is a symbol of danger. I think no body knows why in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China and some other countries brides are wearing it or similar color like orange etc. It is from 1000 of years like this, so no body knows who start it and why!

I've never heard that tradition of wearing red the next day.....
i think nowadays it desnt' mean anything except you love that color
(or your nasty saas forced you to wear it , if u want to go REALLY modern :@: )
As per my understanding from my culture (afghan).. If you read namaz e istakhara .. green and white is considered be good while red and black is not... So we wear green on nikkah as a symbol of good luck and holy.. while we wear white on rukhsati as a symbol of purity and virginity....
But again these colours are all traditional and all is good !!!!
