NEW DELHI — A Swiss woman who was touring by bicycle with her husband through the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh was gang-raped by a group of eight men, police said Saturday.
Thirteen men were detained and questioned in connection with the attack, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said.
The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple’s mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185).
The woman was in a hospital Saturday in the nearby city of Gwalior, Gurjar said, adding that she and her husband apparently suffered no major injuries.
Police detained 13 men and questioned them in connection with the attack, he said. Six of the men were released after questioning. No other details were immediately available.
Indian television stations showed scores of police searching the forest where the attack occurred.
India has seen outrage and widespread protests against rape and attacks on women since December’s fatal gang-rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, the capital. The crime horrified Indians and set off nationwide protests about India’s treatment of women and spurred the government to hurry through a new package of laws to protect them.

There is gang rape in SL too these days...so much killing and raping girls...and no one knows anything about it...coz it is govt. thugs who are doing it. They do it to tourists too...
Everyone thinks it is all hunky dory jst coz the war is over...but it is not...I never recommend any one I know to go to SL these days.

oh god..this is really bad stuff...i was not sure if this is for real but just checked BBC and it is a real incidence..poor couple was on a bike trip and camped in the village for the nite...
sex rape has become so pronounced in india ....problem is that it will take a full generation for some permanent solution to be in full effect and for people to think of women differently....yes hang them and do justice but lets not forget reformation of society...people's attitude towards women need to be be changed..in a fundamental way and that will take time
I truly hope this thread does not become another india-pak bashing thread....everything that i said above can be applied to Pakistan as well.,

the only stories i am reading about India these days is women and children being raped and killed what is going on. The indian government is failing badly because this problem seems to be getting worse!

Rape happens everywhere, it simply gets more coverage these days in India, for whatever reason.
Just to drive home the point, a young woman was raped here in New York just a month ago... But for whatever reason, it didnt make it into the international news.

agreed and good point...plus police caught a couple in islamabad recently which used to kidnap young girls for sensation..they wanted to have fun in their lives....and the male partner used to rape those young girls..he even raped a young 11 year old girl when she was already dead..later he burnt her dead body...he raped another 22 year old girl when she was unconscious under drugs..he raped her so badly that she lost her life....it was a very educated couple by the way...guy was a HR manager in a steel mill in Islamabad....i could not sleep whole night when i read those about those news....toba toba!
so rape happens everywhere, and india is no different....but i do believe that in india/pak, rape intensity, cruelty and ferocity is in its own league and needs to be carefully evaluated...

india definitely has a big problem with female abuse, and rapes are only part of this. half the country is stuck in the extreme patriarchial system where honor resides on the female sexuality, and the other half of the country has women out in places they were never seen before. lots of idiots have the slut or sister syndrome. its good to see the young indians getting louder in their condemnation of these kinds of events, but this is not going to disappear just like that.

there was a lady killed and her 10 year old daughter raped near albany today. american media and blogosphere is strangely silent on this but is quick to latch on to any news coming out of india.
Yesterday, a spokesman for Madhya Pradesh police caused anger by suggesting that the Swiss woman and her husband were partly to blame for the attack. Inspector Avnesh Kumar Budholiya said the tourists had been careless in travelling to a remote part of the country they knew little about.
“No one stops there,” he said. “Why did they choose that place? They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They would have passed a police station on the way to the area they camped. They should have stopped and asked about places to sleep.”
