swades means "my country". the real word is swadesh but in villages it is called swades. hence both words are correct.
Swa + desh= my+ country.
Gucci, umer and nicolas: If a movie doesnt get hit in India it doesnt mean that audience is not mature. If village people were the only audience then all the english movies would never make any money in india.
There are so many factors involved like when it was realeased, songs ,cast etc. If you release a movie during some big public holiday than nobody is gonna see it, or when there is cricket world cup, or if a better movie is running successfully etc.
like during the time when gadar was hit, no other movie made money.
Directors say that the movie is ahead of time when it is not hit, i call those people cry babies.
May be people dont like the movie, may be people cant relate themselves to the characters, tell me seriously which average indian can relate itself to the guy in swades as it shows a returning indian from america. like naam was a nice movie but never was in big hit list.
Murder etc "soft porn" movies were hit because they are some of the first movies who showed nudity on that level. so they got something new to show, now if you release more of those movies no body is gonna watch them.
I am sure swades will be hit overseas.even taal was not hit in india but made a lot in foreign.
i dont like taal at all!!!! i thought it wasnt great it was arite just like that hrithikh and kareena movie subhash ghai made! yea i didnt say swades isnt gonna be a hit i think the movie was great! im sure everyone feels differently.
Swades takes Bollywood out of the rut of silly NRI romances and mindless action flicks that it is currently trapped in. The film’s eventual box office fate will make no difference to this assessment of its worth. If it fails, it would be more a comment on the quality of the audience.

the review has intrigued me even more... I gotta watch this movie. Its not unusual for such movies to do well in the west, because in India, the masses constituting a movie's audience are typically the low income class people who've worked their sweat and at the end of the day, they need something "entertaining" and not necessarily something with a message...
No wonder why most of my contemporary favourite bollywood movies such Main Azad HooN, Lagaan, Khamoshi haven't done all that well in India.

this is exactly right...a lot of us harp on the movies needing to focus on accuracy and reality. but for millions of poor indian moviegoers, reality is nothing more than an unending struggle. why, after a long day of work, would these people want to be reminded of "reality"? they want uplifting, fantastical type movies - heros and heroines, lots of wealth, storybook endings, etc., usually the types that western or west-influenced film buffs will hate. these types seem to be the biggest hits.
Swades has that independent feel - the realism, artistic qualities, etc. So if the typical Bollywood flick is what you're looking for, then this really isn't it.
Awesome movie. Movie has a smooth pace and never showed unrealistic things.
This is first time they peoperly showed america, i mean they didnt dance on streets like baboons with like 1000 people watching them.
very down to earth movie, must see must buy kind of movie . after a long time shahruk didnt over act and i guess no other present actor could have done that role.
Songs are nice too.
watch it people, you wont be disappointed.
the only thing which could've made it better for me is if they didn't have all the songs crammed in the later half of the movie... my fav. songs were at the beginning though - Yunhi Chala Chal Rahi and Yeh Tara Woh Tara.
Shahrukh acted great (for once I'm saying this)... and all his other flicks seem so gay in front of his potential in this movie.
I'm highly critical of Bollywood flicks, but for this one I was dragged to the threatres against National Treasure.
Swades was good, really good actually. For once I'm glad it wasn't centered around a love story. Shahrukh was great and so was that new girl. The songs were so-so but have the potential of "growing-on" me.
Finally got to see “Swades”. AMAZING. One word to describe that movie. A very bold storyline. Most mainstream Bollywood directors wouldn’t dare venture out into such “hatke” topics but Ashutosh Gowarikar has done just that. The story is so un-Bollywoodish. No running-around-trees, no hefty villains, no helicopter chases, no raunchy scenes, and I could just go on and on.
I liked sooooo many things in the movie:
The locations were just simply awesome. Classic desiland. I was amazed at the realism of the picturization. Most directors would prefer cardboard sets for village-based stories. This was a friggin’ real village!!
The screenplay was very crisp and flowed smoothly. Some would say that the movie was too long but I wish it was longer!!!
The lead female was sooo pretty. She wasn’t the hi-fi model type but I fell in love with her (or maybe with the character she played??). Her expressions were a bit weird at times but for a female in her position, her reactions to Shahrukh would be natural. Her character needed to maintain her own dignity and composure and not get swept away by the firangi hype of Shahrukh’s.
Shahrukh was just perfect for this role. I never really liked him as he often overdoes his Romeo roles. But this time around, he simply was the best. The guy is just amazing. He must be like some 50,000 years old and still is so trim and in shape. I would say he looks much much better than beefchunks like Salman or Hrithik.
The songs were topclass too. AR Rahman once again proves why he rules Bollywood. “Yeh jo des hai tera” is the highpoint in this movie.
This movie applies to just about any desi - Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nepali and so on. It could apply to any of us. Only the names change, places change and perhaps religions change. But otherwise, anybody would find it hard not to be touched by this masterpiece.
Hats off to the entire “Swades” crew for this work of art
Ppl, please let me know what you felt about this movie.
