The moderates particularly the students who brought Iranian President Khatami to power are disaffected as according to them Khatami has not been able to bring about reforms as were promised during the election campaign. Another reason is the conservative Guardians Council’s ban on more than 3,000 reformist candidates, which has made the entire atmosphere tense in Iran.
However, there is one thing that unites the Iranian nation even during this political crisis, the belief in their right to pursue a nuclear program. According to Iranians their program is for peaceful purposes only, as they want to enrich uranium to low levels, so as to produce fuel for a series of atomic power stations it has yet to build and which is also permitted under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.The Americans, on the other hand allege that Iran is secretly pursuing its nuclear program for the production of nuclear weapons.
This created a long and bitter controversy over the past few months between the Iranians and the United States, the latter wanted the case to be brought before the United Nations Security Council, so that adequate measures could be taken and sanctions applied as a punishment at Iranians recalcitrance. However, the European trio led by the French, Germans and the British were able to snap out a deal with the Iranians which saved them from embarrassment and provided them with enough time to decide about the course they would want to take, before they are referred to the UNSC.

In the similar vain, it is yet to be seen how long the Europeans are able to ignore the Americans and to what extent they would go to put up with the Iranians. Clearly, the guarantees from the Iranian side would lead to the incentives from the other side. In this regard, the talks that are supposed to take place on December 13th and in the days to come, dealing with Iran’s agreement to freeze enrichment of uranium and negotiate the Paris accord remains crucial.
