Decision day today.
Re: Suspended trio head to Qatar for hearings
**ICC holding its breath as spot-fixing verdict looms **
The hearing to decide whether three Pakistan cricketers are guilty of charges of spot-fixing will draw to a finish today in Doha, with the reputation of the sport and its governing body, the ICC, resting heavily on the outcome.
The ICC has set considerable store by this tribunal. It described the allegations as cricket’s biggest fixing scandal for decades. Salman Butt, the former Test captain, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir have spent recent days breezing in and out of the Qatar Financial Centre, where their case has been heard, looking more as though they had just won the Ashes than that their playing careers were on the point of possible termination.
Back at home before this case, the players, Butt in particular, remained happily public figures, appearing on television chat shows again in the guise of celebrity superstars rather than players in the dock.
Whatever the cause of their confidence, the ICC would find an acquittal extremely hard to take, partly because it is the prosecuting body and largely because the video evidence provided by the News of the World, whose sting operation has resulted in the three being provisionally suspended, has been so widely viewed.
The tribunal, which has been headed by Michael Beloff, QC, has been sitting for four days, considering the evidence of the players and the separate cases for their defence. It is understood that their lawyers have not been operating as a team, that they have been pursuing different arguments and that this may have been divisive.
The players have been charged with accepting payment and conspiring to bowl no-balls to order on the instruction of Butt’s agent, Mazhar Majeed, at prearranged times during the fourth Test against England at Lord’s last August.
Final arguments are expected to conclude today, after which the panel of three will make its ruling.
If there is a split between the players, it would most likely be between the bowlers and Butt, the alleged middle man. This may explain why Butt went through a particularly long crossexamination. He was followed yesterday by Asif. Final deliberations commenced yesterday afternoon.
Of particular interest in the outcome will be the fate of Amir, the quality of whose debut in England last summer was such that he had appeared to be the new face of the game. There are possible lifetime bans to be handed out today, but Amir is only 18 and is widely viewed as a victim of corruption rather than a cause of it.
The ICC regards this case as an opportunity to make a resounding statement for a cleaner game, but, in the case of a guilty verdict, with Amir in particular, there would be a balance to be made between conviction and rehabilitation.

Re: Suspended trio head to Qatar for hearings
^^ lets call it a truce and pray for Pakistan today....doesn't matter what we think....if any of these can walk away justifiably from this saga, then it will be better for Pakistan and Pakistan cricket.
how about that...?
Re: Suspended trio head to Qatar for hearings
Well my gut feeling is:
Amir = A Ban of 1-2 Years
Asif = A Ban of 5 Years or more
Butt= A Ban of 7 Years or even Life
Motta Butt = will get away although he deserves a trial held in the Public. The best would be infront of Ghaddafi Stadium
Re: Suspended trio head to Qatar for hearings
^ press conference in 15 minutes but apparently the decision will be announced in two weeks time. Lets see.
Rumours:
Salman - Life ban
Asif - 2 yr ban
Aamir - ban till the world cup

In a new twist, however, the tribunal said it had also been investigating the Oval Test between Pakistan and England, and that Butt faced a charge in that context while the two others were acquitted.

This is more like 3 1/2 weeks. Earlier sky news report which you quoted stated within two weeks.
Re: Suspended trio head to Qatar for hearings
^^ well the main point is that the issue remains in LIMBO.....
so now the black cloud will linger on the team till Feb 5th only to possible make a big headline flash right before the WC...
I think the team should shut themselves from all media and newspapers to avoid getting distracted....
