has anyone ever come across a person or family in which the last name is just tacked on for no apparent reason except it sounded nice? Like the child hasn’t taken their fathers’ name at all…and yes I know a few people like this…
my question is…why is it done? and doesn’t it kind of mess with the family tree and make it hard to trace back your family line?
It's very common in Pakistan. Some people put Khan as their last name even though they are not pathans. Some use caste names like Chaudhry.
And there are many who don't use surname at all e.g. a person with the name Boota may be named Muhammad Boota.
My mum’s surname has a funny story. Basically before she was born someone else in the neighbourhood (i think it was in the extended family) named one of their newborn babies after my mum’s sister. My mum’s family was utterly offended so that when my mum was born, they took one of the children’s names from the offending family and stuck it as the surname of my mum! And she still has it to this day! Hehehe
But yeh, I don’t think tracing a family tree is made out as that big a deal. My surname only traces back to my great great grandfather ( i think)
Yeah, I had a friend whose last name was Bibi. All her other siblings had her father's name as their last name but for some reason that wasn't her last name.
if people have nothing nothing else to do they will start such activities you will find mind boggling, and baseless, like this one. I dont see any reason behind surnames even. Darn. We were not bequeathed this caste system and divisions and distinctions. We should only be good human beings, good Muslims, thats it.
Surnames are a way to identify oneself or are you one of those one name people?
PS I am not a pendu to begin with so caste shaste don't matter to me nor do forced cousin marriages. IF you think that is the issue then you are waay off track.
Some families I know do a generational thing. Like Faisal's kid eg Arif, will have Faisal's father's name as surname. Arif's kid will have faisals name as surname. Its weird
I guess that like the arabic bin and binte but one has dropped that part. I think aside from politics, we don't have a sense of surname in Pakistan since things aren't computerized with first and last names unlike the west.
Some women have surnames like Khatoon, bibi, Fatima etc which don't represent their family. Similarly, guys can have surnames like Khan, Qureshi etc. Its entirely upto the parents to give whatever surname they like to their children which may or not represent the family or is the name of father. The surnames may or may not represent tha cast of the person.
I am all up for it , it is their kids , they can name them whatever way they feel like , to me it does not make a difference if they give them sir name as Chaqoo or Churee , like Iqbal Chaqoo , or Shazia Churee.
After they changed fps system to metric system in some country , W.S Miles became W.S Kilometers.
