Surnames....

This one baffles me. Can someone please tell me what is the islamic concept of surnames?

Also, what is the pakistani way? Quite often Ive noticed kids take the first name of their father as their surname:

Eg

Father: Mr Imran Malik

Son: Shahid

Sons full name becomes : Shahid Imran

Enlighten me please!

Re: Surnames…

There is no Islamic way of keeping last names - that’s the arab way you mention. Dont make the mistake of confusing arab culture with Islam :rotato:

Doesn’t make a darn difference - just follow the laws of the land you’re in.

Re: Surnames…

thats not the arab way…

they put a *bin *for a boy like

Re: Surnames....

Its the male chauvinistic way of making names. Why can't they just stick to the family name?

Re: Surnames....

In a Hadith it say that in Paradise we'll be known by our names and the names of our fathers.

The tradition in the Prophet's (Sal Allaahu Alaihe Wassallam) society was to name somone this way where the first name was the persons themself followed by the phrase bin/ibn (son of) and then the fathers name, our Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaihe Wassallam) is called Muhammad Bin Abdullah (Sal Allaahu Alaihe Wassallam).

A lot of people nowadays just miss out the Ibn/Bin part.

Naming like this using Arabic names is also Pakistani culture since it's the most common form of naming in Pakistan and culture is how a people live. I like this form of naming best, you don't have to follow white people in everything.

What really annoyes me is when people use "Khan" as a surname, it's becoming so cheap and wanabe, every Paki has it when it's not a family name or even particular to anyone ethnic group anymore it's just a title used all over South and Central Asia, Far East and the Middle East.

Proper family surnames can also be used though, like the Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaihe Wassallam)'s would have been Qureshi or Hashmi (branch of Qureshi).

For most of us an equivalent of the western 'family name' would be the name of our tribe or caste if you're of Hindu descent.

What gets me really vexed is when women take the surname of their husabnds whther that's his fathers name or family name, what's worse is when she takes his first name as her surname, so god damn FOBBISH.

Re: Surnames…

And family names are not male dominated???

Re: Surnames....

Actually in Punjab, the first name theory is also not followed all the time.

For example, my great grand father name was "Muhammad Yar" and then my grand father name was "Ghulam Hussain" .. now some of my chacha's have Hussain as their last name, some have Ahmad and my phophos are totally different.

I don't like last names, a child should be named as his own identity.

Re: Surnames....

people in pakistan dont always follow the last name rule. all of my dad's brothers including my dad have different last names.

Re: Surnames....

In Surah Al-Hujurat 49: Ayat 13: O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).

It clearly say that names are just an introduction and Family Names are just to let other know that from which tribe or Family you belong. For Example Malik, Khan Bungash, Khetran, Najar and Syed just shows that. That is why most people firmly stick to their family name. Otherwise you have to find this by asking ??? and a good complete family name saves you from that trouble.

Re: Surnames....

is chaudry a caste name? arabs use tribal name ?
