I read it somewhere that according to a survey “lead” was commonly found in the blood of alot of children in India and Pakistan. After the research they came to know that it was due to their mothers putting excessive surma (not the orignal one, the one made with lead) in their eyes.
Can it be true ? If so, how would people know if the surma they are using is the right one or the one made with lead.
p.s. I don’t use surma, just curious to know.
Re: Surma in eyes
yes traditional surma has high concentration of lead (along with other metals ..sulphur, antimony) it can cause retardation in kids if used when the mother is pregnant (and can be equally dangerous for the women). Hashmi surma is banned in the US due to high concentrations of lead.
people used to believe that surma protects their eyes (since in the middle east it helped protect them from the glare of the sun.
Re: Surma in eyes
In the state of Maryland Khol/surma has been banned for sale, this came about in september after two children were diagnosed with lead poisoning because they had worn lead based eye cosmetics.
[FONT=Arial,"]**Maryland authorities have set a precedent in the US after succeeding in their attempts to ban the distribution of lead-based eye cosmetics in the State on the grounds that it could caus lead poisoning. http://www.oag.state.md.us/Press/2006/122806.htm **
[FONT='Times New Roman,"]And FDA has no regulation permitting its use in a cosmetic or any other regulated product. In addition FDA has put our Import Alerts on cometics as containig khol/Surma.
[FONT='Times New Roman,"]But ladies, some manufactures also label eye cosmetics with the term khol (to indicate the shade) plz check the ingredients - to make sure
