Surge for Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party

A Dutch anti-Islam party has more than doubled its seats in parliament in a national vote, though it is unclear if it will take part in a coalition.

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders said he wanted to be part of government.

The election saw the centre-right Liberal Party (VVD) emerging as the largest party, one seat ahead of the centre-left Labour Party.

The Christian Democrat party of outgoing Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende suffered a big defeat.

Weeks of coalition negotiations are expected to follow the election.

With more than 99% of votes counted, the VVD had 31 of 150 seats, while Labour had 30.

As the party with the most seats, VVD leader Mark Rutte could now become the first prime minister from his political camp since World War I.
Headscarf tax

The unexpected big winner was the anti-Islam Freedom Party, the PVV, which took its number of seats from nine in the last parliament to 24 - its best-ever finish.

The campaign had been dominated by a debate over the economy, which was thought to have eclipsed immigration as an election issue.
ABut the strong showing for the Freedom Party, led by the controversial Geert Wilders, is a sign that immigration was still a powerful theme, correspondents say.

Mr Wilders has campaigned to stop the “Islamisation of the Netherlands”.

He wants the Koran banned, and has suggested a tax on headscarves worn by Muslim women.

“Nobody in The Hague can bypass the PVV anymore,” he said on Thursday, AFP news agency reported. “We want to be part of the new government.”

The Netherlands is the first country in the eurozone to vote since a crisis erupted earlier this year over the single European currency, amid concerns about debt in Greece and other southern states.

The Dutch economy was contracting for a year before the country emerged from recession in the third quarter of 2009.

Mr Rutte has advocated steep budget cuts, a pared-down government and a reduction in benefits for immigrants.

“The Netherlands can emerge stronger from the crisis by taking measures now,” he said after the vote.

The VVD, which had 21 seats in the outgoing parliament, had topped opinion polls for several weeks. Labour lost two seats compared with the previous elections in 2006.
Balkenende quits

Final results will not be declared until 15 June, when all overseas votes have been counted.

Without an outright majority in the 150-seat parliament, the VVD and Labour will now have to try to forge a coalition with at least two other parties, the BBC’s Geraldine Coughlan reports from The Hague.

Mr Rutte has reportedly said he would not exclude any party from a possible coalition. During the campaign, he said he would have a coalition in place by 1 July if his party won - though analysts questioned whether this would be possible given the closeness of the result.

After the Christian Democrats plummeted to a historic low, outgoing leader Jan Peter Balkenende resigned his position as party leader and said he was quitting politics - though he also said he would stay on as caretaker prime minister until a new coalition was formed.

The party won 21 seats, 20 fewer than at the last election in 2006.

Mr Balkenende described his party’s crushing election defeat as “disappointing”.

“The outcome is clear. I’ve told the president of our party that I will be resigning as party leader and that I won’t be serving as a member of parliament,” he said.

The election - the fourth since 2002 - was called after the centrist coalition government, between the Christian Democrats and the Labour Party, collapsed in February.

The government fell when Labour withdrew from the coalition after refusing to extend the Dutch contribution to the Nato force, as outgoing PM Balkenende wanted.

Dutch troops are therefore expected to leave Afghanistan by August.

Apologies the title of the thread should have been Surge for Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party

re: Surge for Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party

finally the dutch are waking up...about time....

^ Wonder why people like you are still sleeping...but please continue to sleep...

re: Surge for Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party

if muslims exploit ideology of islam to achieve political aims anywhere in the world…why others must not have a right to oppose it?

///though i do ot find any cultured reason in this type of statement of the dutch party…

this type of jazia imposition is another side of the same ideology…

*He wants the Koran banned, and has suggested a tax on headscarves worn by Muslim *
*women. *

The jizya is a tax on non-Muslims just like a state tax of today. It’s there for the protection of the non-Muslims just like secular state uses tax to fund military. The military in return defends the state. That is the same. The Muslims pay the zakaat (2.5% of their wealth).

The Dutch are bullying and racist. Nothing more than that. Hitler was the same.

what a stupid comment. Atleast seculat goverment doesnt differentiate between majority and minority religion. Law/tax is same for everyone.

if you dont like then dont visit their land.Simple..

bittu, Chintu and Mercenery,

The vast majority of the PVV voters is low educated. No, i don't look down at low educated people, but you get my point (i hope).

The rest of the Dutch people laugh at Wilders and disagree with his point of view.

There are Goray who apologise for the 1.5 million people who voted for Wilders, because they don't want the rest of the world to think that everybody in Holland is like Wilders.

So Bintu and Chintu, i know the two of you are anti-islam and thats why you are getting excited for Geert.

But Mintu you?? I don't get it, what wrong with you?
Where did it go wrong?

i am not anti-islam. i just dont agree with the policy islamic country follows. They itself dont give rights to minorities in their country and expects the other countries to treat muslims good.

But those islamic countries don't lecture others on freedom of speech, homan righsta nd host of other countries.

re: Surge for Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party

Its not about Islam.

Its about the kind of people who are moving to Holland.

They are some of the most backward, uneducated, ghetto Arabs and muslims.

They cant deal with a modern western society like Holland and thus close themselves in these enclaves of apartment blocks and ghettos where they create a mini-version of their home country but live off the state's generous welfare system.

Holland has no use for these kinds of people.

And thus a natural reaction by the people of Holland to elect anti-immigrant parties.

Its like if millions upon millions of Black Africans started to move into Pakistan. Make Pakistanis a minority in their own cities, commit most of the crime, practice their own religion and customs, make certain areas no go for Pakistanis, etc....

Would Pakistanis want more of these Black Africans to come or will they vote for parties which will restrict immigration of Black Africans?

I CANNOT believe that jiziya is even a talking point today.

It was imposed in primordial times under the caliphate or something. NO modern Islamic state -- Pakistan, Malaysia, Egypt, Kuwait, UAE, Indonesia imposes it. To even bring it under discussion is ignorance the kind I can only expect from our friendly neighbors to the east.

This is like saying we should blame the modern day western powers for the whole deal of colonization.

There's no justification for what they're doing by this whole campaign against minorities in Europe -- at best, they can be as bad as Saudi Arabia (an extremist state where less than 2% of the Muslim population lives). What a comparison that is -- the free, liberal west with a backward regressive Arab regime! They're falling off their moral high ground and no longer can preach the rest of the world about the freedoms, liberties and human rights they so feign to espouse.

As they say, the rot always starts in Europe. It's been that way for the last 500 or so years.

Before disagreeing with the policies of Islamic states, do you even KNOW what their policies are? Please educate yourself before you start firing away hate via your keyboard.

what is your criteria for pro or anti-islam. and do you apply the same to muslim masses.....when they talk about non-muslim communities....

ps, where did you find in my post that i am getting excited for Geert???

yes i know. look at ahmedis in pakistan and ur blasphemy law.

You cant preach any one to change their religion in your country but your mullahs can travel to other countries and preach theirs.what kind of logic is that?

Re: Surge for Dutch anti-Islam Freedom Party

So much for Europe being a location of tolerance, democracy and freedoms.

[note]Thread title changed as per tweety_pie's request..!!![/note]

Wait, you dont live here, so you dont know what type of people are coming over.

Secondly, the low educated, isolated, (slightly) racist, easy to influence (brainwash) people voted for PVV.

Don't talk as if you are a gora from Holland

As I said, please educate yourself. I cannot have discussions with bigots or semi-literate individuals. Anyone with a basic level of understanding knows what the blasphemy law, as much as I disagree with it, applies to. Ahmedis do preach in Pakistan -- how do you think their community stands at the millions of numbers it currently has? There are no travel restrictions on them either. Think, and then type.
