Surahs and weak ahadith

Many of us have often heard that the recitation of certain surahs have certain benefits. For instance, recitation of surah Ya Seen brings about forgiveness and that recitation of Surah Waqiah brings wealth. But I have learned that most of the ahadith associated with these sayings are either weak or fabricated, but in the Subcontinent they are touted as though they are true and authentic. I know that the Quran in its entirety is beneficial, is a mercy and source of healing, and that we should be reading all of it instead of focusing on select surahs for worldly gains. And Allah is so merciful that He can grant us a job, or resolve our problems merely through making dua and not reciting a wazifa or a surah. However, at the same time…it may sound strange…but I feel sad/disappointed in knowing that common beliefs about surahs are based upon weak/fabricated hadith. Supposedly there was even an individual who made a list of benefits for every surah and before dying he confessed that he made it up because he wanted to draw more people to reading the Quran. Yes, I know it’s sad that our motivation is often worldly. But I feel annoyed at the person for doing that, for misleading people. It’s like feeling gypped :(. Are the weak ahadith still followed or is it wrong to act upon them?

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

One of the virtues of surah YaSeen was that the needs of a person are fulfilled. Also, there is a big difference between fabricated ahadith and the ones termed as weak. Anything fabricated can be disregarded as it's fabricated. As for weak ahadith, they are not used in fatwa but there is no harm in using them as encouragement for something (there's more to it then that but that's the simplified version).

Where did you hear that all (or substantial portion) of the ahadith mention virtues of certain surahs are weak or fabricated? I'd check that claim with a reliable aalim.

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

Captain Obvious, the following was the video I watched among other links:

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

The first thing I would do in that case then is refer the matter to an aalim. As I mentioned before, weak ahadith and fabricated ones are two completely different things. Acting on a weak one is completely different than acting on a fabricated one.

Also, I don't know who the speaker in the video is, so I would ask for clarification from an aalim.

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

I asked the Quran teacher, she has also studied fiqh/shariah? I can't remember, but MA she's knowledgeable. She said the same thing you did...that weak hadith can be acted upon wheras the fabricated should be avoided...and that there's a chance the weak hadith may be a pretty strong one...that it may 70-80 strong if not 100%.

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

Here is something for Surah Yasin ...

Sayyiduna Ma'aqal ibn Yassaar (Radhiallaahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Yaaseen is the heart of the Qur'aan. nobody who intends the Aakhirat shall recite it except that Allah will forgive him. Recite it upon your deceased.' (Sunan Abu Dawud) Imaam Haakim has classified this tradition as Saheeh (authentic); Mustadrak al-Haakim vol.1 pg.565 - see al-Targheeb vol.2 pg.376 Imaam Ahmad has narrated in his Musnad with his sanad from Safwaan that he said, 'The scholars use to say that when it is recited by the deceased, Allah creates ease for him/her.' (See Tafseer ibn Kathir vol.3 pg.571) Sayyiduna Jund ibn Abdullah (Radhiallaahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, 'Whoever recites Surah Yaaseen at night seeking the pleasure of Allah, His sins will be forgiven.' (Muwatta Imaam Maalik). Imaam ibn Hibbaan has classified it as Saheeh - Saheeh ibn vol.6 pg.312 (see al-Targheeb vol.2 pg.377) A similar narration reported by Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (Radhiallaahu Anhu) has been recorded Imaam Abu Ya'ala in his Musnad and Hafiz ibn Kathir has classified its chain of narrators as good. (Tafseer ibn Kathir vol.3 pg.570) Based on this narration, Allamah Munaawi (RA) has analysed that whoever will recite Surah Yaaseen during the morning, will also be forgiven, Insha Allah. (See Faydhul Qadeer vol.6 pg.259) Sayyiduna ibn Abbaas (Radhiallaahu Anhu) says, 'Whoever recites Yaaseen in the morning, his work for that entire day will be made easy and whoever recites in at the end of the day, his tasks till the next morning will be made easy.' (Sunan Daarimi vol.2 pg.549) A similar narration has also been recorded by Imaam Daarimi from Attaa ibn Abi Rabah. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best Moulana Muhammad ibn Moulana Haroon Abbassommar FACULTY OF SPECIALTY IN HADITH CHECKED AND APPROVED: Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

For Fada'il the scholars say weak hadith can and should be used ... but for ahkam only authentic ones ...

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

It was actually a search on surah Waqiah that led me to the information. I had read that several people read the surah and found good jobs. When I went to search the hadith for it, I found out it was weak. I asked the Quran teacher and she said that we're allowed to act upon the weak ahadith. While we were talking she was looking through a book containing surahs and ahadith behind them, but did not find any reference for Waqiah in the book. However, she suspects that the hadith behind surah Waqiah are much stronger and that she'll look into the matter. She shared her own personal experience that in school she was told about a hadith stating to recite this surah 40 times and that nobody had said anything about it being weak at the time and she acted upon it with faith as her husband had lost his job. She recited it 40 times...not sure if that's 40 times in one sitting or for 40 nights as it's said the surah should be read at night. But she read it with faith and Alhumdolillah was relieved from the distress. I know it's not the Surah that has any power, but it's Allah who grants and He grants without recitation too. But anyone else have such experiences with surah Waqiah?

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

I follow a strong Sufi tradition of reciting Surah Waqi’ah after 'Asr whenever possible, preferably once daily between 'Asr and 'Isha.

Re: Surahs and weak ahadith

quran ho yaa hadith asal bunyaad deen hai mazhab nahin.

yahee wajah hai jin rawayaat ka deen ke mukhaalif matlab nikalta hai woh sab ki sab man gharat hen chahye woh kisi kitaab main milen.

deeni rawayaat chahye sanad ke ehtabaar se zaeef hi kyun na hun mohtabar hen keh un main deen ki taraf raghbat dilayee jaati hai. is ka asal asool yeh hai keh har bhalaayee ki baat achhi baat hai aur har achhi baat khudaa ki taraf se hai insaanu ki behtari ke liye.

To asal baat samajhne ki yeh hai ham islam ko deen samajhte hen yaa mazhab.

jo log islam ko mazhab samajhte hen un ke lihaaz se khudaa ka duniyaa ke maamlaat main dakhal qaable qabool nahin hai. yahee wajah hai khudaa ko pooja paat se matlab hai aur insaanu ko insaanu par hakoomat se. religion and kingdom separation issi nazriye ki bunyaad hai. isi ko laadeeniyat kehte hen.

jitne ambiyaa aaye woh sab issi baat ki tardeed karte rahe keh insaan ko insaan par hakoomat karne ka ikhtayaar hai khudaa kitaraf se. jo log insaanu par insaani hakoomat ka jawaaz fraham karte rahe un ka kehna bhi yahee tha keh yeh khudaa ne kaha hai, yani insaanu par insaanu ki hakoomat ki ijaazat khudaa ne de rakhi hai.

issi liye jin rawayaat main mazhab par zor diya gayaa hai woh unhi logoon ne ghadi hen jin ko khudaa ka nizaam qaable qabool nahin hai.

jo log khudayee nizaam ke haami hen un ke liye islam deen hai aur yeh hameshaa se aik hi hai.

is baat main kis ko shak ho sakta hai keh quran ke padhne main laa mehdood faaide hen magar sirf aur sirf is tanaazur main ke un faaidun ko haasil kiya jaa sake. yaani quran ko mehz padhne ke liye na padha jaaye balkeh samajhne ke liye padha jaaye. taa keh us ke maqsad ko bhar laaya jaa sake.

is ki misaal aap yun samjhen keh aik naqsha aap ko diya gayaa hai makaan banaane ke liye magar aap baithe us ki taareefen karte rahen aur baar baar padhte rahen magar makaan banaane ki taraf koi dhiyaan hi na den to kia naqshe ka maqsad poora ho jaaye ga? quran bhi aik insaani maashre ki imaarat tameer karne ke liye insaanu ko diya gayaa hai, lihaaza agar aap us ko samajhne ke liye nahin padhen ge to kia us ka maqsad poora ho jaaye ga?

quran ko padhne ke liye seekhna acchi baat hai is main faaida hai kyunkeh agar aap is ko padhna nahin seekhen ge to samjhen ge kaise? albatta jab aap quran ko padhna seekh jaayen to us agla marhala us ko samajhne ke liye padhna hai na ke mehz padhte hi chale jaana hai. aap yahan aik asool ko yaad kar len ke haasil ko phir se haasil karna naamumkin hai. yani jo cheez aap ke paas hai us ko aap dobaara haasil kar hi nahin sakte. ab agle marhale ki taraf tawajo deni pade gi.

aap ko quran ko zabaani yaad karne ke liye baar baar padhna drust hai magar jab aap haafize quran ho gaye to ab sirf tajdeede yadaasht ke liye is ko padha jaaye ga taa keh bhoole nahin aur phir agle marhale ki taraf tawajo deni ho gi.

agar aap qurani program ko bhar laane ke liye quran ko marhala waar padhte jaaye ge to faaida hi faaida hai magar agar aap ne kahin ghalat tanaazur main quran ko padha to is main faaida nahin nuqsaan ho ga kyunkeh aap ka waqt aur taaqat zaaya hun ge aur koi munaasib maqsad mansoobe bandi ke mutaabiq saamne nahin ho ga to haasil kia ho ga.

yaad rakhen quran aik inqalaabi kitaab hai koi jantar mantar ki kitaab nahin hai. mazhab jantar mantar hi sikhaata hai aur yun aadami khud ko gumrah kar leta hai. yahee wajah hai quran ko mazhabi tanaazur main padhne ki koshish na karen kyunkeh phir uljhan dar uljhan ke siwaa kuchh bhi haat aane waala nahin hai.

deo maalayee qisse kahanyun se bachen in main kuchh bhi haqeeqat nahin hai, duniya wohee hai jo khudaa ne banaayee hai aur woh aap ki aankhun ke saamne hai keh kaise kaam karti hai. quran ko issi ke tanaazur main app ko samajhna ho ga tabhi aap yeh dekh saken ge ke is main kia kia kharaabi hai aur is ko kaise kaise theek kiya jaa sakta hai.

agar aap ke zehn main yeh baat hai keh quran har marz ki duwaa is lihaaz se hai keh is main falaan aayat yaa sooraty itni dafa padhen ge yun yun, flaan falaan waqt par to yeh ho jaaye ga yaa woh ho jaye ga to yeh man gharat baaten hen. agar aisa hota to aap ko woh rawayaat milten jin ko aap batore karaamat pesh kar sakte. kia aap yeh bataa sakte hen woh kon si aayat yaa soorat hai jisse padhne se aik insaan ko kataa huwa sar dobaara jud jaaye aur woh insaan zinda ho jaye? aik kataa huwa haath yaa ungli bhi is tarah ke wazeefun se jod kar dikhaa den. aap aisa kabhi nahin kar sakte is liye keh quran aisi bebunyaad baatun ki taraf insaanu ko nahin bulaata. balkeh woh har masle ka hal insaani ghoro fikar aur tajarbaati aloom ke zariye sikhaata hai. jo jo ilm aap is tareeq se haasil karte jaayen ge waise waise kaam aap ke liye karne mumkin hote jaayen ge hattaa ke aap kataa huwe haat paaon bhi jod saken ge aik din basharte ke aap ilm seekhte jaayen aur tajarbaat karte jaayen.

aik din yeh duniyaa insaan ke qadmun ke neeche ho gi yeh baat hai jo quran bataata hai magar kahin aik jaga bhi yeh nahin kehta keh tum mehz wazeefe padh kar aisa kar lo ge. issi liye mazhab aik banaawati shai hai jo logoon ke jazbaat se khelta hai aur aqalo fikar ko paas bhatakne nahin deta.

agar ham logoon ne aqal seekha hota aur apne main se aqal mand logoon ki baaten maani hotin to aaj insaaniyat jahan ham hen isse bahot aage jaa chuki hoti. magar ham ne ulti taraf chalna shuroo kar diya aur aaj ham yahan tak pohnche jahan ham khud ko paate hen. agar ham ne ab bhi aqlo fikar se kaam na liye quran aur haqaaiq ki roshnee main to phir hamari tabahi khud apne hathun hone hi ko hai.
