Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Obama: Supreme Court ruling on health care a victory for all Americans - CNN.com

I am certainly not a politicaly inclined person. I vote in the presidential elections, but that’s about it. I’m not too sure how I feel about “Obamacare”, but I do know this: my mother worked for 30+ yrs in the healthcare industry in America, and when she changed professions (real estate) she couldn’t afford healthcare or find a provider to even consider her because of “pre existing conditions”, was diagonesed with end stage cancer at the age of 59, so could not qualify for Medicare, and died with about $250K in hospitaple/chemotherapy bills.

And then, a little while ago, I see this on my friend’s FB status (he is a mortgage lender):

“***Your salary will be reduced on January 1, 2014 so that our company may comply with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The added cost for your family of 2 is projected to be $990/month. We remind you that your gross salary will be reduced by $11,880 per annum effective for the pay period beginning January 1, 2014. We must take these actions for all employees company-wide to remain a going concern while also meeting the mandates provided in PPACA.” - sent from a friend that works at a physician’s office

Something just does not add up. :konfused:

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

I am not so sure about the figures quoted in your friend's FB message, but here is what the law means.

Q: What will happen to my insurance premiums?

A: Most consumers can expect to keep seeing increases in premiums and co-payments because the underlying cost of health care is expected to rise. The law contains a few mechanisms to curb premiums, but it also requires that many insurance providers make their benefits more generous, which will raise their cost. Older people could see their premiums go down because of the new age rating rules insurers will face. People who buy policies without the help of an employer could get a better deal by being able to shop on the exchanges, where comparing plans will be easier than before.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

So it would make more sense to not automatically enroll our family of 5 into my husband's insurance package offered by his employer, and shop around instead?

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

scare mongering, what repubicans do best. they are always so scared of everything. anyone who knows the system will tell you - right now the uninsured get care in the least efficient manner, with their cost of care amplified and added to the taxpayer's bottomline. if everyone has insurance, premiums will not rise, they will fall. what will fall are jobs in the insurance industry whose only job right now is to create a smoke-screen - does anyone here know what their insurance's negotiated rates are for procedures? why is simple things like this not available in an open manner?

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Aaah yes Micheal Moore was talking about this earlier… sounds like a good thing for Americans. Good to see socialism is making a mark and heading towards a positive future. :k:

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Medical billing by itself is non-transparent to the patient. It's so difficult to make sense out of bills. Just for a simple procedure you are likely to receive multiple bills, where any doctor who even passed by you will send a bill.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Khatti maybe youvshould be more active politically. It is not necessarily a positive when folks announce they don't get involved in politics.

I do not believe the message you got. Those figures appear bogus.

Those who have healthcare wont see changes. Mandates - originally required by Republicans - ensure that those who can afford it have to get insurance. This way they cant just wait till they get sick and then demand insurance coverage.

The poor who cant afford insurance will be subsidizef.

Insurance companies can no longer deny coverage for preexisting conditions
The rethugs aided by the media have been flat out lying. Visit dailykos.com and watch Chris Hayes on msnbc sat and Sunday mornings. Watch bill moyer Sunday evenings on Pbs. Be informed. There is no middle - only truth. Right now only the far left speaks the truth.

Ok - got to wipe the foam off my mouth.

I am not an Obama fanboy and don't think this law is flawless, but the yahoos going after it have been around for many terms. Why did they not come up with a solution prior to this.

Aside from sloganeering, i bet we will find interesting info if we dig into their financial dealings with healthcare, insurance and pharma industries.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

I don't get Americans. Since when is Insurance for healthcare services a bad thing? You gotta be pretty stupid to think that considering how expensive healthcare is in the US.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Being apolitical isn't an option anymore. Check out the docu 'Money-driven Medicine.' A profoundly depressing expose that makes you want to put a gun in your mouth.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Here was one of the responses from a republican Congressman

This law will be harmful to a struggling family which has healthcare
A family that has healthcare - if that iscstrugglijg - then what of families that cant afford it?

The supreme court justices who voted against the law ought to be ashamed. These are th same folks minus one plus chief justice Roberts who few days ago voted minors should be tried as adults
Luckily they failed 5 to z4 just as now.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Just having health insurance is not a solution. There are many procedures which insurance will not pay for, and many doctors that exclude themselves from accepting health insurance. A middle class family can easily go bankrupt even if they have insurance that pays 80% of the cost.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Agreed, I need to be more informed as to what is going on in the political arena.

Thanks, I'll definitely check it out.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

all i know is i hate our healthcare. it is a big mess. BIG MESS.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

^agreed Philo. It's sad, sad, sad.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Today's wsj stated that hospitals will benefit since more patients covered. Insurance companies not so much because they cant deny coverage for preexisting conditions. Freeloaders who can afford to buy healthcare but choose not to will have to buy.

Of course the paper took a swipe saying us spends 16% of budget on healthcare but has less to show than Europe countries. As if this can be blamed on this bill.

The bill expected to save 1 trillion ( this from memory). More persons will get coverage. So per capita costs will go down. Those are the facts.

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

that's so messed up. what kind of a society is this?

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

The irony is that the crazies who are against the public option carry banners such as " keep government off my Medicare". So help me but don't help others.

States in the south have fought and succeeded in not expandind Medicaid - which is for the poor. (Medicare is for Senior citizens who are a powerful voting block)

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

Like the Presidente himself once said so eloquently!

Who will pay for this healthcare bill?

Yo mama!

Re: Supreme Court Rules in favor of Affordable Care Act

The cost per capita is expected to come DOWN! there will be more competition in terms of exchanges to procure insurance. Companies with I think > 50 employees pay $2000 per employee if they don't provide insurance. There will be a 3.8% surcharge on dividends and capital gains foe single folks who earn > $200000 and married folks with >250k annual income. Cost for majority goes down. The freeloaders who choose to avoid insurance but can afford it get "taxed" with penalty (which is fair).

Bottomline this is less expensive per capita than existing system. Embrace obanacare.
